One of the intricacies of running lies with whether or not one listens to music during the runs. Although many people who like to listen to music use it to zone out and go on autopilot, quite a few people would rather hear the world around them during a run.
Many people like to be able to listen to their surroundings. Not only can it help them if there is a need to be informed about something, but it also helps them enjoy running like a "pleasant Sunday drive". If you are on a busy path, being able to hear bells from cyclists becomes useful when avoiding collisions with faster moving bicycles. Being able to hear cars is obviously another good reason to omit music from your runs. If people if a runner without headphones, they are more likely to give you a "shout-out". That can be a very powerful adrenaline booster near the end of an arduous run. However, you also have a hear unpleasantries, such as running below a train driving by (although that may urge you to do a temporary sprint!). However, that takes your mind away for your stride for a moment, reliving some stress.
Another reason why many shy away from headphones comes from the "bipolar" mentality when listening to music. When listening to music, you get a rush from your favorite song coming on. However, when that song ends, you could be in a rut from "now what?" Running at a steady pace can become more difficult because of the highs and lows from listening to different music. One does not have that problem when music is not listened to.
Even if you are a staunch music enthusiast while running, see what it is like without the tunes. It literally will open your eyes to a new world. Unfortunately, many people see those who do not listen to music as snooty, but it can be quite an enjoyable experience. You may notice some things on your next run that you would never have guessed were there if you had blocked it out by listening to music.
My name is Christian A. Lautenschleger, and I founded http://starttoruntoday.com to help people lose weight by running. Thank you for reading my article, and please visit http://starttoruntoday.com for more information to learn how to run!
I have enjoyed both lustening to music and not. I actually didnt have anything for the longest time. So i went musicless for a while and it taught me to zone out sometimes. I would go for a 15 miler with no head phones and the next thing i knew i was done. I had the same experience though with music too. Great topic to cover though. I enjoyed reading it.
I do agree but only to a point...I found that when I started running it was easier to listen to music..now that I have been running for a while once and a while I will run without it. I can't say it helps me one way or another but I know that just starting out I preferred it until I could get the joy of running without feeling like I was dying...the key to me is if music helps why not and when you get involved in it a bit more then try it....
I have noticed the few times that I have run without music that I actually run faster. I try to listen to fast paced music but I think I might try going without music a little more.
