Today\'s Run

The run today was amazing. There was freshly fallen snow, the sun was shining and the temperature had risen to +5°C which is quite pleasant.

I decided to see if my favourite summer route was passable. It is mostly on tracks and paths in a rough terrain south of town. There weren't too many people out there, I saw one other runner and that was it. I guess most of the people who otherwise would go for a walk today went skiing. I had considered going alpine skiing, but on days like this it gets far too crowded up there in the ski arena.

I had the paths for myself and was in no hurry. Somewhere it was necessary to walk because the snow was too deep. I was thinking about the sound when one steps on the snow, I am sure it is possible to recognize whether it is thawing or freezing. It sounds different. It also smells different. But it doesn't matter, I like the fresh clean air of the Icelandic winter.

When I passed the high cliffs I saw some fulmars. They are big, white sea birds I am almost sure migrate out to the sea during winter and come back to their nests in spring. I wouldn't say it is spring yet, but some of the earliest migratory birds show up this early. A very early sign of summer. I didn't see any ravens as I usually do during winter. And there were no other birds or any living creatures to be seen anywhere.

When it is wind still it can be endlessly quiet out there. There really is no sound from anything. No birds, no animals, no traffic, nothing. Just the sound of my footsteps in the snow and my breathing. And the music in my mp3 player. Today I listened to Adele and Muse. Usually I like the pop music my kids listen to. I get easily tired of the same old songs and on runs longer than a few kilometres I just want to listen to some nice quiet music without too hard beat.

I decided to take the straight road back home because the snow on the paths was a bit tiresome. Then I could feel it was getting colder and the sunshine had disappeared. I didn't carry any energy drink and I got a bit tired, but nothing else was bothering me this time. My body is obviously perfectly okay and it felt good to get some sun in the face.

When I came home I could log 15,5 km.

I think it is the sound of the snow under foot that got me in. It was something I really noticed. When my Icelandic friend arrived in Australia he couldn't believe how our dry sand squeaked when he walked on it! It's these little things that really evoke memories. In Iceland the air is so pure and the water so clear. I would enjoy being out there with no music at all! Very peaceful and calming! And your english? Alveg fullkomin!

There is plenty of peace and quiet out there and when you spend several hours each week there, it can become a bit boring.

What has been said below, echos above, you have the ability to transport a person into your world. I am in the tropics but during the read I felt the cool of the snow and the silence of the wilds, I even heard your music, great writing.
