I normally never wore anything on my head when I would go out for training runs. But there was a point in college where my coach encouraged me to wear a white cap while running. The reason was because we were in Maryland for our national track championships and it was going to be an extremely hot day. So our coach came up to us and asked us to go get a white running cap inorder to get some relief from the sun while running the 10k. So here is the reason why a white cap relieves you from the sun.
Specifically, the cap needs to be white. The color white is the most reflective of all the colors. Actually, it is all the colors. Remember in high school or middle school science class where you shined the light through the prism and all the colors appeared on the other side.
So white is highly reflective and this is beneficial how. Well, I don't know about you, but I run all year round. So on those days in the summer where it is hot and almost unbearable, you may want to grab yourself a white running cap.
The reflection of the light will actually allow your head to stay cooler. I like to think about it like this, when you have a black car it has been sitting in the sun all day it is scorching hot inside and in a white car it isn't so bad. Same thing with a white running cap. plus you give your eyes some shielding from the sun.
Some running caps can even act as a sweat band, preventing the sweat from rolling down into your eyes on those hot days. You all know what I am talking about when you get salty sweat in your eyes and it stings. You go to wipe your eye with your sweaty fingers only to make it worse. My eyes are watering just thinking about it.
So there you have it, the benefits of wearing a white running cap. Did I mention they are stylish too?
A few friends of mine used to wear a white cap that was made by Brooks. I personally have a cap from Asics. I wear it from time to time on those occasionally hot days in the summer. I was pretty glad my coach suggested this too me a few years ago.
