Why Do People Enjoy Running?

Don't you wish you could enjoy running as much as he is right now? I often used to ask myself "why do people enjoy running so much?" I still believe it's a legitimate question, especially for those of us who haven't experienced the joy of running their first mile or finishing their first race. It can be hard to empathize with a runner until you've actually been in their "shoes".

As I've pursued running in the past couple months to aid my weight loss goals, I've found that it truly does become enjoyable for many reasons. It can be hard to describe the feelings to somebody who isn't a runner but I wish to share some of the reasons I personally have come to LOVE running so much in the past 2 months.

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy running so much is just how challenging it can be, both mentally and physically. Even after running for almost 10 weeks, every day I go for a run gives me the opportunity to push my boundaries. Sticking to a running and exercise schedule tests my discipline on a daily basis. If I try to make up excuses to not go for a run, I'm the only person to blame when I don't fulfill my promise to myself.

As I set running goals and started achieving them, I became so motivated to continue pushing myself to new heights. Over the weeks, my motivation started pouring into other aspects of my life. One of the results of such motivation is right in front of you! I'm truly amazed how something as simple as running has changed me in such a short amount of time.

Another reason I find running to be enjoyable is the time it gives me to relax and de-stress. Believe me, I know it's hard to picture something physically demanding as a way to relieve stress, but both the body and the mind respond well to the exercise and being outside.

Running also gives me time to think about important decisions I need to make or act as a getaway of sorts. Sometimes I just need to get away from everything and running does that for me exceptionally well.

To top it all off, I've lost over 20 lbs since I started running. The combination of being more motivated and losing weight has given me even more reason to continue running. I needed a way to lose weight and get back in shape and running fit the bill perfectly.

Now, I can't guarantee you'll enjoy running as much as I do. It will certainly vary from person to person, depending on many things. But what I CAN promise, besides the health benefits, is that if you find a way to make running enjoyable, you're already ahead of anyone else who is running just to lose weight or get in shape. When you can make something like running enjoyable, it will be an easy decision between watching T.V. or going out for a run.

Congrats on the weight loss from getting into running. I am glad you found something that helped you in that way. It is definitely a challenge to find motivation in something hard like running and exercise without motivation and enjoyment in it. Great read thanks for the input!

I share your enthusiasm. I ran every day when I lived in NYC. Like you, I lost weight and built muscles where there were none before, like in the calves of my legs. Mentally, it was wonderful. Fairly recently, I tore a meniscus which makes it painful to run, but do a lot of walking. Running is great. Thanks for the inspiring article.

Thanks for your comment! You could apply this "tips" for walking as well if you want to do that. I don't know though, if I had my own pool, running might go on the sideline for me as well...haha.

Walking is just as good as running! It's one thing that I think everyone should take the time to do every day. I understand not everybody can run for many reasons but most people can walk and should do it!
