How to Make A Baking Soda Volcano

If you are looking for information on how to make a baking soda volcano, you have come to the right place. Whether you are building this for the purpose for a science project at school, you are having a themed party or you just want to "show off" your baking soda volcano making skills, you can get a volcano up very quickly following a few simple steps.

How does it work

Baking soda is a base substance and vinegar is a very acidic substance...when you combine the two, you get a very memorable demonstration of chemistry. Upon the two ingredients coming into contact with one another, your volcano will erupt!

Ingredients Needed to Make a Baking Soda Volcano

  • 1 Large baking pan with sides
  • An emply 2 litre pop bottle
  • Masking tape
  • 6 cups of white flour
  • 2 cups of salt
  • 4 tablesppons of canola oil
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Room temperature water
  • Food coloring (any color you like)
  • Funnel
  • Vinegar
  • Large size mixing bowl

How to Make a Baking Soda Volcano

Step 1: Put the pop bottle in your baking pan. Take your masking tape and "tape down' the the bottle to the pan...this is to give it a firm base. Mix the flour, salt, oil and water into your bowl. It should turn into a dough fairly quickly.

Step 2: Mold your dough from the last step around the pop bottle (without getting any inside). If your dough isn't sticky enough, that is no problem as it just needs to be a bit more dry.

Step 3: Warm up water slightly. Add your food coloring to the water (red usually works the best to give the real volcanic feel). Carefully pour the water inside the opening of the bottle. With your funnel, fill the pop bottle about 3 quarters with the coloured liquid.

Step 4: Pour the baking soda inside of the pop bottle -- you may want to use the funnel for this as well so you don't make a mess. The is preparing your baking soda volcano to "blow". If you are travelling with your volcano, you will want to stop at this step until you are ready to create your demonstration.

Step 5: Now the fun begins. You can make the volcano erupt by pouring the vinegar into the top of the bottle. It will start to foam immediately and pour down the sides of your volcano. This reaction causes carbon dioxide to be emitted...the same output that a real volcano has.

That's it...pretty simple right! I hope my tutorial on "how to make a baking soda volcano" has helped you out.
