Most subjects will probably seem relatively easy to approach when considering helping your kids along with their studies. It's usually when we come to kids and science or maths the panic starts to kick in. Why is this? Well if your anything like me I hated anything with numbers when I was younger, I liked writing and drawing pictures but numbers - hell no!
This won't get any better the older we get, if we hated it or were not very good at it when we were younger we are unlikely to be any good at it now. So what happens when we get to kids and science? How do we approach it? The trick is to not let the fear build up inside you and ruin your tutoring - approach it with as much confidence as you can muster.
Kids and science does not have to be a hard task if you try your best to make it as much fun as possible. After all, how many of you are sick and tired of hearing the theme tune to Sonic The Hedgehog blasting out of the living room as the kids start another marathon on the games console. It's bad enough they refuse to go out and play when the weather is fine but being stuck in front of the TV is just a wind-up.
So, if the kids insist on staying in then you must insist on an hour of science - no arguments. Science is all around us in everyday life so linking popular things to kids and science should not be to difficult. You have to grab their curiosity and keep it at the forefront for an hour, so how do you do this. Focus on things they can smell, touch or see. Remember how often your kids like to ask you questions about the things around you and how they work, use this to your advantage.
A lot of parents will lose patience with answering so many questions and basically make up an answer to get a couple of minutes peace. Don't do this, jump at the chance to bring up the subject of kids and science and learn together. Going back to making up an answer - always avoid this. Its much more educational to pop out to your local library with your child to look up the answer or simply go online if you have an internet connection.
Kids and science does not have to be as frightening as you may think. Always admit if you do not know the answer to something and then find out the answer together.
