Science Experiments For Middle School Make Science Fairs More Fun

A middle school science fair can be a fun and interesting event for both students and parents.  Parents are generally pretty amazed at how in-depth science experiments for middle school can be and how many different ideas that are covered. Some of the concepts that are displayed and being demonstrated cover science ideas that go well beyond the knowledge of many adults. You could see some amazing electrical an hydro power experiments, as well as some quick and easy science fair projects that look at the affect a common household items have in different situations. Sometimes these simple experiments end up being the most fun and interesting.

Demonstration experiments come into play more often in middle school. Sometimes they will demonstrate what happens after they laid the ground work in the earlier steps of an experiment, and other times it  will be a short ,on the spot demonstration. When kids have a chance to demonstrate at a science fair, it just adds to the fun and raises the over all interest level. Visitors can go from display to display and not only see all the hard work the kids put into this, but have kids do a quick explanation and demo for you.

Besides making a more interesting science fair, there are more subtle benefits for the students themselves that ultimately add to the positive and fun side of middle school science fairs.

One is that really becomes a high school training ground, so the experiments that are done as they progress through middle school will build a solid skill set to get them ready for high school.  It is so important that they internalize the steps to the scientific method, to the point that it becomes second nature. The only way to really do that, is to keep making them do experiments both in school and independently at home.  This way things like creating a hypothesis, and steps that change only one variable at a time become the norm.  How research comes into play, how to verify, and how to best display results are all things that will be important in high school science, and yet science experiments for middle school can still be part of a fun project.

Building independence  and having parents stay in the background is another thing that happens with middle school science fair projects. For some parents this can be hard to do, backing off and letting their kids fend for themselves, but it is possible to stand back and become a guide, cheerleader and organizer.  The simpler the science fair project, the easier it is to get these do it on your own habits going.  The cool thing is that when kids are having fun with these things, and proud of their work, they can't wait to share what they are doing with their families.  Parents might end up spending just as much time dealing with science experiments for middle school as they did for elementary school, only this time they get to mostly watch the experiment and if it is a demonstration, their child might let them do one too.
