Why is Mr. Martin cool?: Well, there is small number of people capable of bearing title "one of 100 most influential people in the world" as easy as he. Always ready to answer an interview, comment on some ordinary stuff, or joke on his own account. And off course there is superhuman ability to ignore thousands of fans of A Song of Ice and Fire requesting to finish his book in reasonable timeframe, instead writing until he is satisfied with what is done. Much like certain publisher of favored video games, who's motto is "It will be done when is done". In both cases results are worth the wait, so take your time Mr. Martin, just be careful not to "pull Robert Jordan" on us.
A Game of Drones: "A long time ago, in a kingdom far, far away…". Yes, I'm comparing A Game of Thrones with Star wars universe. Star Wars brought something new in already established space opera, making great impact and setting cornerstone for old franchise, reviving it with different interpretation of old postulates. Just like in A Game of Thrones - everything is still there, only different. Hopefully new interest for Epic Fantasy that A Game Of Thrones awakened with its unconventional style will serve as turning point for entire genre.
What did you say…?: As a avid reader of Fantasy for many years now, I can say one thing with certainty - A Game of Thrones ( and all the books in A Song of Ice and Fire series for that matter), is first of all a breath of fresh air, much needed in genre which followed same cannons for many years. Many so called experts are trying to separate this work from rest of fantasy classifying it as "Medieval" Fantasy. Placing it as separate Fantasy subgenre. To them I say - don't do that! Fantasy is Fantasy, for the sake of some administrative classification, they are putting a wall between Martin's work and rest of the genre. And that is wrong! What I would like to see is many more work similar to Martin's, and not in some new subgenre, but in my dear Epic Fantasy.
Orc with an attitude: Until now only seen as meat to hack by Heroes brave and bold, in Martin's interpretation it would go something like this: " Droloc saw human shorter and weaker than himself, hardly moving in steel amour, and wielding sword strangely gloving with runes of virtue. This was already boring to him, raised in fighting pits of tribe Blooded Talons, he was one of mightiest fighters of his people, and smart enough to survive everything destiny had to throw his way. " YOU FILTY ORC!", human screamed, "I will relieve world of your existence". "What did he say? Who to hell speaks like that", was going through Droloc head as he prepared his axe to split open this idiots skull...".
Is Winter really coming?: Yeah it is, only, knowing Martin, it's going to be late. The Winds of Winter, supposedly sixth book in the series (supposedly because series was meant to be trilogy), is to be published in timeframe of three years. But don't hold your breath. In the meantime HBO is working on season two for Game of Thrones, which follows events from second book in the series - A Clash of Kings, so there will be something to watch and comment until The Winds get published.
Try me…: If after all said here, you are not convinced to try reading than I give up. Just kidding, there is still lot more from where this came. You can help me though - please comment on this article, I really want to hear other people opinions on this subject. Thus helping me to write better articles, and promote George RR Martin and his work in best way.
