A Storm Of Swords By George Rr Martin - My Review

After great job with A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, Martin continues in the same manner in his third book in A Song of Ice and Fire series of epic fantasy books. Events are unfolding with tremendous momentum, and characters are struggling to keep with up as everything around them begins to look like a giant whirlwind.

This is probably most "hated" of all books in the series. Many of well known characters see defeat, banishment, even death, as troubled times take their toe from everyone. Must admit that reading came hard for me also, but it doesn't make the book bad, on the contrary, it's great, keeping you glued to the pages until last chapter.

Of the five Kings, one is dead, and another defeated. Only remaining are Joffrey, Robb and Balon, while Stannis is retreating from defeat at King's Landing. Time will show, however, that it is not meant for any of the pretenders to sit on the throne. As winners become losers in unexpected turn of events, characters must give all that they have only to remain alive.

The Starks are receiving another hard blow, after the execution of Ned under false charges of treason. Two more of the family will meet end of their lives, and when least expected. Others wander the lands in search of their destiny, following their captors, or completely vanish from the plot, as destiny is seemingly determined to completely erase them from the lands.

Night's Watch battles wraiths (undead creatures raised by The Others) for the first time, and is forced to retreat to the Wall. Men from the Watch rebel, and kill Lord Commander Jeor Mormont while retreating toward the Wall. Jon befriend King-beyond-the-wall, and learns that wildlings are retreating south before The Others. As they begin their attack at the Wall, Jon manages to escape and rejoin the Watch. As wildlings start to gain upper hand in battle against small number of men in Night's Watch, Stannis appears leading the charge of remains of his defeated army, and turning the tide of battle.

Dany decides to give up one of her dragons for army of mercenary eunuchs - The Unsullied, but as soon as given command over them, she commands them to sack the city and reclaims her dragon. With newfound army, she starts campaign of sacking slave owning cities along the coast of "Slavers bay". Releasing slaves, and gaining followers.

This quick recap doesn't give "A Storm of Swords" enough credit. It is monumental book, packed full with lovable characters, unexpected plot turns, and all the stuff that make people love reading. George RR Martin shines in this book, polishing his writing to the point when it rivals great classics. Don't miss this masterpiece of Epic Fantasy art, and both of his predecessors - A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings.
