How to Rank In Google+ Local

Have you been confused lately with all the changes that have been happening with Google Places and Google+ Local?

Google has recently merged its proprietary Google local listings portal called Google Places with its now super popular Google+ search experience site and named it Google+ Local.

But this doesn't mean you have to resubmit your listings all over again as Google is currently in the process of merging its Places listings into Google+ Local.

But did your listing miss the boat?

Or perhaps you want to move things along more quickly?

Well, the good news is that you can test to see if Google has moved your current places listing into Google+ Local. All you have to do is visit Google Plus and then navigate to the Pages section located on the left side of the screen.

From there, you will see a large red button on the top right labelled 'Create Your Page'. Click that and then select the Local Business or Place square button that has the red pin.

You will then be prompted to enter in a local phone number. This is to see if your listing has already been created. If the listing has already been published, simply follow the provided prompts to merge the listing.

But What if You're Starting from Scratch?

Let's say you attained a brand new shiny client who has a local business and would like to get listed in Google as they do not have a website. Or we can say they have a website, but do not have any form of Google local listing. Either one, the following steps will help your client get ranked in Google+ Local.

Step One: Get Tons of Info about Your Clients' Business

The more information you have about your client and their business, the less likely you will need to contact them for further information.

See if they can provide a small 'elevator pitch' type paragraph about their business. This content will be used for the listing.

Tip: Don't tell them that it is for the listing, because they will end up having writer's block!

Step Two: Claim Your Clients Google+ Local Listing

When you start this process, make sure you are signed into your own Google account as you are able to manage several Google+ Pages at once.

This also ensure you have control of the listing thus making sure they continue to pay their invoices.

Go to Google+ Local and following along the same steps as above. Just make sure you fill in as much possible information about the business. This would include:

  • Business Name
  • Business Address
  • Business Phone Numbers
  • Business Categories (Try to be as accurate as possible)
  • The Elevator Pitch
  • Website (if they have one)
  • Business Hours
  • Any website the business owner may contribute to

Verify the Listing

Now you need to tell Google that the business listing actually exists. They will give you a few different options to do this.

Verify by Phone.

When prompted, Google will actually call the provide local number and give you a PIN number to enter. This method is typically instant.

Verify by Address

In some cases, they will send you a postcard with the PIN written down on the postcard. This method can take a few weeks.

I have heard of some situations where Google no longer provides the verify by phone option. If this is the case, then use the address method.

Once the listing is verified, your clients listing will be published and ranked. Depending on the level of competition, the listing may be ranked at the top or at the bottom.

Regardless, the listing should be treated as a website and should be marketed accordingly.

I a local listing but, it does not seem to come up in the serps. I was wondering, is the description area the only place you can optimize or are there other ways to do this? Great article by the way, it did clear up a few things for me. Thanks
