Identity Theft And How it Can Affect Your Business

There is perfect way to prevent any type of crime from happening to you. You can take steps to prevent things from happening, but there is no guarantee that it will not happen. One of the crimes that you have to watch out for today, is identity theft and identity fraud. The definition of these crimes is basically where someone gets your personal information and uses it in a way that involves fraud or deception. There are many different ways that someone can use your personal information. Listed below are a few of the different ways.

• Tax fraud- An identity thief will get ahold of your social security number and file for a tax refund before you do. The government will give it to them because they have a valid social security number. Then when you go to apply for it, they will not give it to you because ‘you’ have already received one. That means that you will lose out on your money and potentially much more.

• Health care- A criminal will get a hold of your personal information and get medical treatment under your name. A sure way to detect this is to look at your

Medicare statement you receive after treatment. If anything does not match up with what you have had done, it is a sign that someone may have a hold of your personal information.

• Credit cards- A thief can also open credit cards and have access to your bank accounts if they have your

personal information. They can rack up a ton of debt in your name that you will have to deal with.

As you can see there are many different ways for identity thieves to cause problems. What you do not want to happen is for one of your clients at your business to have problems. When people buy something from you, or are in need of your services they usually have to provide personal information. If they buy something they may use a credit or debit card which produces a receipt that has personal information on it. If you need them to fill out medical forms or other paperwork for your business that will more than likely have personal information on it. What you need to know is that you cannot just throw it away. Instead, you need to make sure you have some form of document destruction in place.

The most common form of document destruction is shredding. Shredding will get rid of the papers that have personal information on them so no one can use them. If personal information from a client were to get out, you could be in a bunch of trouble. So instead you should contact a document destruction company like TNT Shredding. They will come to you and get rid of all the documents you no longer need. This will save you from a potential lawsuit because you did not properly get rid of a client’s personal information.

TNT Shredding serves the greater Phoenix area, so give them a call today.
