Protecting Yourself & Your Home From Burglars

My family is gearing up for a vacation in a few weeks. While I am super excited to get away and relax, put my feet up and bask in the sunshine, I’m a little worried about leaving our home behind for a week.

You see, it’s depressing to think about, but it’s really not that hard to break into a home these days. In fact, a lot of people practically hang signs on their front door that say “Hey! I’m sick of my super-cool, brand new iPad. Come on in and take it off my hands, would you?”

Home security systems can be expensive, and I know it's not in my budget right now. So, while home security is on my mind, I thought maybe, just maybe I could put together some tips to help you keep your home safe while you are away. With these tips you’ll be prepared to enjoy your next tropical vacation or weekend getaway without worrying about your home.

Be Loud.

Now, I’m not talking about being the loud, trashy, annoying neighbors we’ve all had (or currently have). I’m talking about an alarm system. When I think about security systems for home, I generally imagine an impenetrable force field (okay, so I’ve read too many sci-fi books). Security systems don’t actually stop anyone from breaking in, but it can make your home less desirable to thieves if you use it properly.

Alarms are super easy to use. You install them, activate them and then just have to remember to turn them on. That last step is the tricky part. The problem with alarms is that by the time they go off, typically the burglar already has what they were after.

The key is to make sure you broadcast your alarm – that means you should put out that ugly sign that says you’ve got an alarm. Burglars should know you have an alarm BEFORE they target you – that way they won’t target you.

Don’t Announce When You Are Away.

While you want to broadcast your alarm system, you don’t really want to broadcast the fact that you’ll be on vacation from October 1 at 6:45 a.m. to October 9 at 5:32 p.m.

We like to share, that’s why social media is so popular today, but be careful with what you share. The internet doesn’t discriminate. Pedophiles, hackers, burglars and your nosey next-door-neighbor have access to the same internet as you do. Just be careful. Save your vacation posts until after you get home!

Light it Up.

No, I’m not talking about a cigar; I’m talking about your house. The very first thing a thief learns in burglary school is to not get caught and the first step to avoiding capture is avoiding detection. If a person can’t see you, they can’t call the cops. So, by keeping your house lit, you’ll dissuade burglars from targeting your house. By lighting both the inside and outside of your home you’ll make the home appear occupied, so burglars will pass by it. Burglars are really looking for unoccupied and easy targets. If they have to work too much, they’ll skip your house.

Be Unique.

Twenty years ago, it was probably okay to hide a spare key under your doormat. A few years ago those fake rocks were perfect for keys. And the doorframe is still a great place to hide your key … as long as your burglar is only about 4 feet tall.

Welcome to the 21st Century … it’s time to step up your game. Don’t hide your house key in an obvious place. Sure you’ll reduce your inconvenience if you lock yourself out, but you’ve also made it super easy for a burglar to walk in.

It’s best to not hide a spare key on your property; instead leave it with a trusted neighbor a house or two away. But, if you must hide a key on your property, make sure you get creative.

My last tip is a pretty obvious one, but it’s something some people don’t worry about. Use your locks. You’ve got locks on your doors and windows for a reason – make sure you use them. If you’re leaving for any period of time – even if it’s just a few minutes – lock your doors and close and lock any windows.

Of course, home security systems are the best thing you can do to keep your home protected, but if that's not in the budget right now, try the tips mentioned above.
