What are some common signs of social anxiety disorder? Do you think you may have it? If you are having some sort of social dysfunction in your life, then social phobia could be a potential problem. Maybe you thought you were just naturally "shy" or naturally "anxious." Regardless, it is something that you CAN get over if you take corrective action.
Some obvious signals that may tell if you have social anxiety is that if you feel some type of discomfort when interacting with people. For some, it may just be while giving a speech or presentation and for others it may be in all social interactions. Regardless, it is something you want to tackle before it further affects you.
So let's take a little inventory to see how bad it affects you. Answer all of these on a scale of 1 to 5 - with 1 being "Not True at All" and 5 being "Completely True." I will analyze your scores of the criteria below.
- If an order at a store or restaurant is incorrect, then I feel anxious and usually do not speak up about it.
- I feel intense fear that inhibits me from saying what I want to say.
- I would rather avoid new social situations.
- I am afraid of trying new things due to fear of being judged and making mistakes.
- I am afraid of emotions - in myself and having them around people.
- I avoid saying things and telling the truth to prevent someone getting angry.
- I am likely to do things for others before myself.
- I feel unworthy.
- I would avoid a promotion at work in order to avoid being in the spotlight.
- I am afraid of approaching members of the opposite sex who I find attractive.
If you scored:
- 10 - 20: you obviously do not have serious social anxiety and shouldn't have it adversely affecting your life if you answered truthfully. Go live your life.
- 21 - 35: You have moderate social anxiety. Even though it is not as severe as others, it still causes you dysfunction and dissatisfaction in your life. Pursuing a plan of treatment is highly recommended.
- 36 - 50: You don't need me to say this, but you have a problem you need to address. Take it seriously and seek appropriate treatment. I know this causes you a tremendous amount of pain and I really empathize with you. It won't go away if you deny it and try to ignore its effects, so take action ASAP.
