Dealing With Social Anxiety In College - 3 Tips to Help You Beat Your Shyness

Dealing with social anxiety in college can be a huge challenge. Supposedly that time to branch out, find yourself, and become independent; for those living with social anxiety, this combination can become a nightmare. However, I am here to deliver some good news. This is something you can overcome, and your life will be so much better because of your efforts. In this article, I will tell you 3 tips that helped me get over my own social anxiety.

1) Take opposite action. This disorder is one based on avoidance - of people, of responsibility, and of higher expectations. I know that it seems terrifying and painful to start confronting the things that cause you the most emotional pain, but this is the only true way to overcome your emotional disorder. Acting against your anxiety is how you get rid of it - and doing it consistently. I know, I wish there was some easy way out, but as of now there isn't. But putting in this hard work will give you a very rewarding sense of self -esteem that will benefit all areas of your life.

2) Focus on reality. Most people with social anxiety are "in their heads" a lot - thinking negatively about the future and past, obsessing over their anxiety, and ruminating about the smallest things. This is not your fault but just a symptom of this disease. What you can do to get out of this is to get around people and focus on them. Ask them questions about themselves. If you're not around people, focus on your environment - the trees, clouds, or furniture if you're indoors. This will help you to 1) focus your attention away from your thoughts that are reinforcing your anxiety and 2) break the associations between fear and interacting with other people. Two birds with one stone!

3) Consciously do good things for yourself daily. Most with social anxiety do not have high opinions of themselves - again a symptom of the disease. One thing you can do to counter this is to consciously do good, healthy things for yourself daily. Over time, this will reinforce the belief that you are worthy, deserving, and lovable while evicting the deep-seated negative beliefs you have about yourself. For example, making sure that you floss every night is a simple, yet effective way to do this. Also, eating a piece of fruit or making a healthy smoothie is good for this. You can also do things like take a walk, listen to music, anything as long as you're consciously doing it for your own benefit.

Hope this helped, and stay persistent. Your thoughts will try to get you to deviate, but do not let them get you upset and win! Beat your social anxiety!
