Fighting Social Anxiety: A Recipe for Success

Fighting social anxiety is a real challenge. However, on the other side of anxiety are indescribable feelings. So what is the quickest way through your social fears to get to a point to where you can actually live out your life instead of avoiding it? This article will give you the "recipe for success" to overcome your social anxiety.

Beating your extreme shyness is going to require a few things:

1) Persistence. Everyone has a different degree of this disorder, so you're going ot have to work at it until you get there. For some it could just be a few weeks and for others it could be years. The only way to fail is to give up.

2) A willingness to endure discomfort. Overcoming this is going to require you to experience discomfort a lot. It can seem overwhelming and very tempting to just give up. The way I looked at it was like a trade off: I am experiencing X amount of discomfort temporarily so that in the future I will feel confidence instead. This will work better if you are working towards happiness and good things instead of simply trying to get rid of your depression and social anxiety.

3) You to start becoming more selfish. A lot of people with social anxiety are people pleasers. Because they have the belief that they are not good enough, they must "please" other people in order to make up for it. However, this is a lose-lose situation for both parties as your pleasing behaviors come off as needy and insecure which naturally drives people away. Also, it just reinforces and perpetuates your anxieties.

So, starting now, begin putting you and your happiness first. You are the only person you can directly control, so, therefore, your happiness is your responsibility - the good news. Other people do not make you anxious. You give that meaning to them in your subconscious beliefs.

4) Support from other people. This may sounds like a lot, but you are going to have to "come out" about this to a couple people whom you trust. Tell a friend, family member, or find a counselor. Telling people this is something you struggle with will give you a huge sense of relief since the root of this disorder is based in "hiding" things about yourself due to fear.

I didn't write this just to regurgitate some generic, self-help mumbo jumbo. I wrote this because these strategies have worked wonders in my own life since I struggled with this disease (an emotional one) for almost 20 years. Don't let it ruin anymore of your life. Take action today and do not deviate until you are done fighting social anxiety.
