Is Twitter Good For Building Self Esteem?

I am fascinated by the different ways that people use Twitter. Promoting personal brands, promoting businesses, building brand awareness, reaching out to a wider customer base, marketing, sharing news or special offers, sharing quotes, sharing information, having arguments, having fun, being silly, being rude to other people, showing off, sounding off, getting angry, improving confidence and building self esteem.

All the behaviour that can be observed in every day face to face social interactions can also be seen on Twitter. However, the obvious difference with Twitter is that information you may have formerly shared with a select group of friends or family or customers is now shared with lots of people. Despite this is well known many people seem to be completely unguarded in the way they use it and it’s difficult not to come to the conclusion that for a sizeable number of people it’s about saying look at me and how wonderful I am’.

In the papers today there was a picture of Carol Vorderman and one of Kelly Brook both of them dressed in rather racy Santa Claus costumes, which both stars obviously felt the need to post to Twitter themselves. It’s interesting because I’d have thought they would have been too busy with children, family or friends to want to share with the rest of the world what they’re wearing on Christmas Day.

Okay I sound like a spoilsport but I don’t mean to. I’m sure lots of their male and female followers and admirers fully appreciated the pictures – they are both very attractive women but I still question why they feel the need to post such intimate pictures. Perhaps it is just for a bit of fun, but I can only think that behind it is the need for admiration. But why would anyone want the admiration of perfect strangers?

Obviously I don’t know whether Voderman or Brook have issues with self esteem but it’s clear that plenty of people who use Twitter do. However, if you try to improve your self esteem through Twitter, you’re likely to be sorely disappointed.

Real self esteem cannot be built off the back of other people’s admiration or adulation. Yes, we all need praise but self esteem is something that has to come from the inside and it is all about having self belief and confidence in yourself. The problem with relying on other people through a medium like Twitter to tell you how wonderful you are, that warm glow will only last as long as the nice comments do. And as many people have experienced – Twitter on occasions can be an uncomfortable place when people decide to express their opinions.

So is Twitter good for building self-esteem? No I don’t believe it is. Twitter is a phenomenon that isn’t going away anytime soon, but I believe that it should always be used with caution and everyone should be honest with themselves about the reason why they use it and what they hope to get out of it. By understanding that it becomes a far more positive tool and you are less likely to be setting yourself up for disappointment.
