The Stickman ( His Head)

Their favorite source of humor was me, in particular, my head. It was perfectly round and sat on top of my small skinny body with patient hoping one day my body would grow into it. Its main job was to house my intellectual brain and keep it protected from all the accidents I often had because my body couldn't balance its weight. My head has been the underdog in my life but always beating all odds and claiming victory.

"Be still baby head." Joe said while my other friends, Mark, Johnny and Henry, sat on Joe's front steps laughing.

Standing in Joe's front lawn, I shot an arrow into the sky and stood there watching it come down with illusion coming at me. It supposed to had been an illusion. All the others had done it just before me and the arrow landed far away so I wanted to try also. I was six years old.

Joe walked slowly to me looking seriously like a brain surgeon. Standing directly in front of me he placed his left hand steady on my right shoulder and with his right hand reached for top of my head.

"I'm going to do this fast as I can Vernon." Joe said now sounding like an announcer for a golf match. I knew it was serious because he called me Vernon.

The arrow landed in my head without me knowing. I was still looking for it on the ground out the corner of my eyes when Joe pulled it out of my head.

"There!" Joe said with relief.

"How did it get up there?" I asked while trying to take it out of his hand. "Let me do it again." I demanded.

But Joe kept the arrow in his right hand behind his back, and held me at bay with his left hand on top of my head. Mark ran over, grabbed me and held me still to check the condition of my head. To everyone's surprise there wasn't any blood, I wasn't injured, but mostly, I didn't feel a thing.

I fought Mark off and ran.

Me and my head has been through thick and thin; mostly thick. I remember another time we were playing conquer, me, my brother Keith and our friend Ronnie. In this game we walk around the neighborhood looking for something daring to try. The object of the game was to conquer what the winner of the last game dared to do this time; starting a new game.

Keith lead us to the top of two old garages adjacent to each other. He won the last game.

They were no more than six feet apart. Ronnie and I watched Keith run and jump on top of the other garage's roof. Ronnie did the same thing with the same results. Now comes my turn. I walked to the edge and looked down then over at them as they stood there like two long jump winners in the Olympics. The old saying is if you study long you study wrong but I had this one figured out. I was ready.

I walked back to get a running start then started running as fast as I could. I jumped...too soon.

While in the air I knew this wasn't going good. The heel on my left foot hit the top edge of the roof. I fell backwards. While falling I some how turned upside down now falling head first, it seemed like my world had come to an end. What saved me was the buildings were narrower farther down. My head wedged between the buildings.

After laughing for what seemed like hours, Keith grabbed my feet and slowly pulled me out. He told me walking on our way home he knew I was smart but that was really using my head. Copyright number DGUN-GAC7-1GQL-G1E9
