Why is it So Hard For Us to Take A Compliment?

Nice boots. I said that to a woman the other day and she honestly looked like she might weep. She finally managed to say "thank you" and then told me where to find them for myself. It appeared to be a major struggle for her to do, however, as if she had never heard a compliment in her life. That made me think about other moments when a compliment seemed more than a person could actually take. Why do people, especially women, find it so hard to take a compliment that is honestly and freely given?

Does this sound like you? Someone compliments your hair, your outfit or even your purse and you stammer and eventually say something about how you found it at the last minute or you just threw it together or something equally self-deprecating? Do you do this? Try this. The next time someone pays you a compliment just smile brightly and say thank you. You do not have to pay one in return unless you feel like it. You do not even have to break stride to smile and say thanks. It doesn't change what you are doing for the day but it might change the way that you feel. It might brighten someone else's mood as well, because we all like to feel good. A compliment is a good thing and it is high time we start embracing them as such.

So, why is a compliment such a hard thing to accept? First, it is part of society's training. We are taught not to be boastful or overly full of pride. Being proud of our appearance or our belongings may make us appear vain, after all. That reluctance will eventually lead us to stuttering and stammering because someone admired our watch or liked our shoes at some point.

The time has come to skip over those embarrassed moments and just own these compliments. We need to just smile brightly and go on about our day. We need to accept compliments just as easily as we give them to other people. We need to do both every single day, even if we are only doing it with our family members or maybe, especially with our family members. Vanity be damned, we need to be able, to give ourselves the permission to like our hair or our clothing or the things we have worked hard to buy and to thank others for noticing these things as well.
