You Can Be Self Confident

Everyone has potential to use their unique personality and skills for success. You can be self confident when you have a positive outlook on life. Your life improves when you feel good about yourself. I am not talking about getting the idea you are the greatest person in the world or thinking you never make mistakes. We are all unique.

Here are some ways you can become self confident. You can set up exciting goals for yourself, learn to persevere even when you are fearful about a specific thing or situation, work on improving your appearance, and you can focus on your own actions instead of comparing yourself to other people.

Do you have ambitious goals for yourself? For instance, you might decide you want to run a marathon, you want to own a business, or you want to find a cure for arthritis. Find goals that excite you and gets you motivated to achieve those goals. To prepare yourself for a marathon, you can decide how soon and where you want to run a marathon. Then you can set smaller goals like build your stamina by walking short distances at first, and then longer distances, and at some point, you may decide to jog or run and then work yourself up to running for longer distances.

If you want to own a business, you can do some research on owning a business and decide what kind of business you want. Then you may decide to take some courses or do some work in that kind of business for someone else. Then you can save up some money or get a loan.

If you want to find a cure for arthritis, you can start by taking lots of biology and chemistry classes and finding out what kind of training you need (you would probably need to become a lab technician or a doctor to do that),. Then you would take that training and work in the field for a while. You would find people who will work with you on your research project, and then do the research.

I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and I plan to use my degree for blogging and for working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. I want to help them cope with their limitations and to be able to succeed in spite of obstacles.

You can learn to persevere even when you are fearful about a specific thing or situation. Many people have the fear of failure. Other people are afraid of speaking in meetings. Some people are afraid of gaining weight after they have been on a diet. Don't allow fear of failure stop you from pursuing your goals.

Setbacks can show you the importance of having more training or it can mean you are trying something at the wrong place and wrong time. For instance, I do not expect to be able to go without food for three days. I made a big mistake when I tried to go without food. I became very light-headed. I learned from my mistake or setback.

If I wanted to do that in the future, I would build myself up to that by going on a restricted diet, then take longer and longer fasts until I am able to do it for three days. On the other hand, if I wanted to do a three-day fast #no food# while I am facing a death in the family, or I have a sudden spurt of activity due to a fire or flood, that is not a good time for me to stay on that fast.

If you are afraid of speaking at meetings, start small. Start by expressing your opinion with a group of friends. Then you can go to local meetings or meetings for interest groups #for example, a chess club or a quilting group#. When you become familiar with the people, you will be able to express opinions and maybe even become a leader in the group. If you want, you can try speaking in larger meetings such as conventions or hearings related to politics.

I have struggled with my weight most of my life. Many dieters gain weight when they stop counting calories or start eating sweets again. I have done that. If you are afraid of gaining weight after you have been on a diet, you may want to keep track of your eating habits and weigh yourself once a week. When you start gaining some weight #you can decide how much weight gain is unacceptable#, then get more strict about your eating again. I know from experience it is hard to go back on a diet after gaining more than 25 pounds.

Comparing yourself to other people leads to negative thinking. I heard one man talk about pitfalls in comparing yourself to others. You may decide other people are better or you are better than them. If you decide other people are better and you tell yourself you cannot be like them, you become less self confident. If you decide you are better than other people, you might be comparing yourself to other people who are very different than you. If you start puffing yourself up, you might put them down. That is not good either. Many boastful people lack self confidence.

Dad gave me some very helpful advice. He said to compare my actions with how I did them in the past. For instance, if I wanted to be able to walk five miles, I can work myself up to it. Then I can either walk further or do it faster a week from now. Then I can tell myself I made progress. If I did not make progress, I evaluate the reasons #perhaps I was tired or sick, or I became very hot#, and then aspire to do better next time.

When you are self confident, you usually have higher self esteem. You feel good about yourself when you tell yourself you are able to accomplish things you haven't done in the past, and you know your life is getting better because of your positive thinking and your actions. When you work toward accomplishing ambitious goals, you become excited about your goals because you can imagine yourself achieving those goals.

Overcoming fears that get in the way of reaching your goals also help you improve your self confidence. Your life gets better when you compare your actions with how you did them in the past, and you use that information as you work toward reaching your goals. You can be self confident today if you take action!

Self confidence is one of the killers of dreams. People saying "no" also kills dreams when people allow that to stop them. People who are self confident are able to evaluate their obstacles and revise their goals if necessary. Sometimes "no" means a person isn't quite qualified yet, and at other times, it means to keep pushing and persisting in pursuing that dream.

Your dad's a wise person! Your article's great! Interesting article from a kindred spirit! I've got a Bachelor's in psychology myself. Focused on psychology of learning. You're absolutely right, self confidence is important. Goals and excitement matter more than people realize... that's part of my new eLearning product. Hmm. Not sure about fasting for weight loss. I fasted recently; it arose in prayer. THough I'd never have guessed I could do it. During fast? My research suggested weight loss as a bad reason for fasting. Indeed, I did not lose much during the fasting part. Right now? I'm day 47 in a 90 day cleansing, from prayer. Included fasting 15 days no food, then 3 days of squeezing grapefruit and making broth from garden veg before back to eating. Detoxing! Too many prescription meds for too long (from Crohn's, ulcerative colitus, swine flu, repeated lung infections, asthma and more even major surgery). Amazing difference in my health. Coasting into second half now. I do look forward to more articles from you! Enjoyed learning - and your writing's very thought provoking. That's useful!

Hi Cynthia, I was trying to fast for detox purposes. I got very hungry and did not feel well when I tried to fast for 2 1/2 days (actually fruits and vegetables only along with herbal teas). I would enjoy learning more about how you improved your health. I suffer from multiple physical problems also.

Check out my Squidoo walking-fit lens (I link there from my Street Articles book review for Go For NO!). I'll be putting that kind of stuff there over time. Right now there's an excellent book on Master Cleanse that I link to - click thru and you can read part of it online! The Master Cleanse was developed by a doctor in the early 1970's. The book I link to's been around for long enough that it's available in most libraries or on inter-library loan. Step One is read that book. Find out that way if there's things you feel fit for you. Also? You'll find that the first 3 days fasting are the most miserable part. There's some ways to make it better. Including knowing what's happening. I'm still suffering from multiple physical problems but detoxing is making a huge difference. That said, the process is indeed rather miserable. Detoxing chemicals burn on exit...

Thank you for your encouragement. I like to write, and I also like helping people to achieve their goals. I would rather try new things and have some of these things not work so well than to hold back and feel like I have not done much with my life. I take chances and learn from the results of trying new things.
