Eventually even the greatest house in the world gets a little tired, a little dated, a little old. No matter what the budget it, a room renovation can be a chance to go a little green, save the planet and in the end, possibly save some money as well. Green tips for renovations and remodeling projects for every room in the house can be found at your home improvement stores, your contractor or on the Internet.
Every detail should be viewed as a chance to “green up” from the smallest to the largest. Use green certified materials, making sure that they comply with codes and rules and have no chemicals or other harmful materials. All items should be sustainable, renewable and organic as often as possible. New paint and wall paper products are available that have no harmful ingredients and limited amounts of odor as well.
Going from room to room with your renovations:
1. In the bathroom: Using low flow toilets and shower heads reduce the amount of water being used. Make sure that there are motion detection exhaust fans that come on only when someone is in the room and then shuts off after a set amount of time cuts down the time that it runs, and stops the need for reminding family members to turn switches off. Use motion lights with energy efficient bulbs is a good idea as well.
Good choices for flooring include natural slate and bamboo. Make sure that all materials used in the bathroom are water and mold resistant.
2. In the kitchen. Low flow faucets are a good choice here, as is a built in composting station. Using a trash compacter for those items that cannot be recycled or compacted is a good idea as well. Adding a windowsill garden for herbs and small vegetables not only serves as a decoration, but is beneficial for cooking as well.
Solar cooking with an outdoor solar cooker box can bring the kitchen out of the house and reduces the amount of energy that is being used. When the solar cooker is not a viable option, using other cooking techniques can be just as beneficial as any renovation tip can be.
Adding solar panels to a new or existing room is a very good green renovation tip as well, reducing the amount of energy that is needed to run the house. Other energy saving tips include: using wind energy, excellent insulation, and reflective curtains to keep the hot air out of the house in the summer time and the cold air out in the winter
