During life’s most challenging events therapy can be an invaluable tool for finding recovery and hope. Many people who suffer from a personal loss work through the grief that ensues without the help of a trained expert. However, many benefit from seeking the help of a trained expert in the form of grief therapy.

Grief therapy is helpful for those appear to have a prolonged grief response, which is negatively impacting their life and behavior. At times the grieving process can last for many months or years. This is known as complicated grief by experts in the field and has a more severe impact on an individual’s life. This can have lasting effects on a person’s life in many ways, which can manifest itself cognitively and behaviorly. Grief therapy can assist the person by teaching them ways to experience, express and adapt to the changes brought by the loss of the person. It can also teach the mourner that it is possible to experience the negative painful emotions, along with the positive memories of the loved one. Often those who experience complicated grief experience an extreme amount of guilt when attempting to move on with their lives. They withdraw from other relationships, as a result of others not adequately understanding or empathizing with the emotions they are experiencing. Grief therapy is a tool for teaching them that it is possible to move forward with their lives and without feeling guilty. It is possible to honor their relationships with the deceased and still be able to move on.

If the grieving process remains categorized as complicated grief for an extended period of time, it is possible for the individual to develop a major depressive disorder. It is a very fine line distinguishing the grieving process from a major depressive episode. Although the underlying cause may be different, many of the symptoms expressed are the same. A diagnoses is not given of major depressive disorder, unless the symptoms persist for over two months. However, there is no way to accurately measure the normal length of the grieving process and is also different within each culture.

Grief therapy has proven to provide tools for learning to cope with the emotions that come along with losing a loved one. It can be an effective approach for learning to honor a loved and still be able to move toward the future. This type of therapy can be especially useful for avoiding a major depressive disorder and is a valuable tool for the recovery processs.
