Living Green Facts: What Does Living Green Really Mean?

Reading statistics and facts about greenhouse gases, carbon emissions and other green facts typically bore more people to the point of not listening any longer. What it should do is frighten these people to no end. Bury your head in the sand if you want to, but it does not change the fact that every country in the world must do better to improve their air and water quality or face dire consequences.

Right now the United States’ residential sector is behind the Chinese industries in terms of poor energy usage- that’s right, our residential area is only slightly better than another country’s industrial zone. We must make huge improvements, not only in the way our companies do their work, but the way that we, the citizens live our lives.

Think about these facts:

1. Replacing just five light bulbs in your home with more efficient, compact fluorescent lights will keep an estimated one trillion pound of greenhouse gases out of the air over their lifetime. (This can range from the low end estimate of around five years to the higher end of eight in some cases.) To put that into perspective: That amount of gas is equal to the emissions of 8 million cars every year, and could equal up to $6 billion dollars in savings.

2. Landscape irrigation uses and in many cases, wastes up to 1/3 of all residential water use every year. Adjusting irrigation to systems that account for local weather conditions and using native plants in landscape design can add up to a savings of nearly 25 billion gallons of water every year. The advantage of native plants is that they are used to the conditions of the area and will not require extra care to remain strong and healthy.

3. Using green building techniques and materials can mean a reduction in the harmful chemical vapors that are released and the amount of waste that is generated during the building process.

4. Installing and using a water filter in your home cuts down on the amount of plastic waste that gets dumped into the landfills every year. Some plastic water bottles are labeled for recycling, others are not, but their sheer volume makes it nearly impossible for all of them to be effectively handled. For every water bottle that does get properly recycled, there are five more that are either tossed into the garbage, or worse strewn across our highways and country side. Use a refillable container instead.

Green tips are everywhere and by now should be nothing new to anybody. If everybody does their part to take one small green step each day, the world would be a better place.
