Making Green Choices: Saving Green While Saving The Planet

Making a green choice whenever you shop is a lot easier than many people think. Not only are the ecological choices better for the planet, they are better for your family and sometimes for your wallet as well.

You do not have to go out of your way to make a green choice, and a green lifestyle can be just as easy as a non-green one to accomplish. It simply takes a bit of planning, a little logic and a little bit of knowledge. To make the best green choices, make sure that you keep the following tips in mind:

1. Only buy products that can be recycled, are organic and non-toxic whenever possible.

2. Limit the amount of packaging that you must deal with by buying large containers and refilling smaller bottles at home. Disposing of one large container means less trash than several small ones.

3. Encourage the makers of your favorite products to use as little packaging as possible. This not only reduces waste but saves the company money as well. The company can then pass the savings on to its loyal customers.

4. Re-purpose items before buying a new one. Remember the mantra: reduce, reuse and recycle.

5. Products that are full of harmful chemicals and dyes are bad for your health, hard on your wallet and wreak havoc on the environment. Use safer, natural alternatives as often as possible.

6. Grow your own vegetables and herbs or buy from farmer’s markets whenever you can. Not only does freshly grown veggies taste better, there is less time that they spend on the truck to travel back and forth- some fruits and vegetables can be nearly a month old before they make it to your local grocery store!

7. Consider renting or borrowing items that you will only use once or twice. If you do not have a friend that has the particular item you are looking for, consider joining a barter circle to expand the friends and therefore goods that you have access to.

8. Walk or bike for short distances rather than hopping in the car. Not only does this save the planet, but your waistline will thank you for it as well.

9. Install low flow toilets and shower-heads whenever possible. They will save thousands of gallons of water and hundreds of dollars every year.

Green living is just a matter of a few simple choices. Once you get the hang of one new habit, you can add a new one to your list. Recycle whatever trash you could not reduce. Drink tap water, installing a water filter if you feel you have to.

Drinking water in bottles adds to countless plastic bottles being added to our dumps and landfills. Any and every single step you can take toward a greener life is beneficial. There are no small acts, remember, the oceans are made of billions of drops of water.
