I’m going to look, in this article, at actual synonyms for the term heritage. I hope to write several articles for Street Articles on topics that have some tie-in to the term heritage. This can actually open up a broad range of potential topics to write about. This affords a connection even to such areas as book reviews, which appears to me an underserved category in Street Articles. It appeared there were only about 125 reviews, and many of those overlapped each other. So, a good way to define the scope of a niche such as this is to determine what comprises another word for heritage.

I did this in part by checking the usual source for making such a determination. I used a version each of Roget’s Thesaurus and of Rodale’s Synonmym finder in attempting to do so. In each case, the inquiry yielded at least one interesting result. Roget’s actually only yielded one intriguing result regarding another word for heritage, but that result did have a certain attractiveness to it. That synonym word is “legacy,” which per Merriam-Websters online definition involves anything transmitted forward by a predecessor. In this sense, you could indeed tie in book reviews: even a relatively new fiction genre can be said to have a heritage, or legacy, in this sense if it had a recognized founding mother(s) or father(s). The way in which those pioneers of a genre went about their work becomes the heritage of that particular art form.

Even more so, the first subset of Rodale’s suggests a broad scope that extends to religious traditions and the preservation of places of historical significance, as well as family traditions and the transmission of artistic or literary schools of thought. Rodale’s lists “derivation” as another word for heritage. This opens up an entire array of possible topics to explore.

In my own blog at which deals largely with writing and related topics, I do touch a bit on heritage in terms related to literary derivation: although that blog more so deals with other aspects of writing than the historical. However, I do touch on such origins of literary writing as the spirit of place that contributes to setting: and plan to add periodic posts of that same nature. In that regard, some of the synonyms in Rodale under the second and third subsections have even more interest. Those synonyms include the words reward, compensation, and recompense as synomyms for heritage.

But, in terms of personal history, cultural lineage, national identity, or derivations of creative writing and literary works, perhaps the most interesting illustration in Rodale’s of another word for heritage is the term “endowment.” This term can even refer to something as broad-based as natural gifts, qualities, or abilities. Certainly, it encompasses all manner of customs and traditions.

Do you have some particular passion, activity, or area of study that has become an element of your own unique identity and individual heritage?
