School Uniforms

Ah yes, summer is coming to a close. That means it's back to school time for everyone from kindergartners to college students such as myself. And I can't help but reminisce on the days when I had to wear a school uniform.

I remember the issue of school uniforms (whether or not students should be required to wear them) was a very controversial issue. I first had to wear uniforms at school when I was in the 4th grade. I went to a public elementary school, mind you, so I thought it was interesting that the school was making us wear uniforms anyway.

I remember a lot of parents complained initially because they felt like they had to pay extra now to buy clothes for their kids specifically for school. Coming from a poor neighborhood, a lot of these families were low-income. I still saw this as a poor excuse, because those same parents always seemed to have the money to buy their kids expensive video games and shoes. I was the one always out of the loop of that stuff, yet my family still had enough to purchase a few polo shirts and pants.

In high school, I went to a private school that required uniforms as well. Personally, I loved wearing a uniform because I never had to worry about looking cool or what clothes I had to wear. It also made me feel like I belonged, because I was one of the poor kids there, yet I still looked like everyone else. At my school, we also had a rule that if you played a sport, the day of a game you had to wear a shirt and tie. If you don't, you cannot play, simple as that. The philosophy behind that is that we had to dress for success, and it worked! Our school has won many championships over the years, and we often beat the neighboring public schools despite being much smaller in population.

I think what's good about uniforms is that it prevents people from showcasing their gang affiliations. This is what was really good about having uniforms in our schools. Gangs run rampant a lot, and they often wear clothing of certain sports team to show their allegiance to their gang. The uniforms put a stop to that, and this really prevented gangs from doing bad things on campus because it took away their "uniform" so to speak.

I think uniforms are a good thing to have in school, and I don't see what all the controversy is about. I mean, think about it, even when you have a job you have a dress code, right? Whether you work at fast food, retail, or in an office, they don't just let you wear whatever you want. You have to dress a certain way to promote unity and professionalism. School uniforms are the same way. It promotes unity and it makes students take their education more seriously. I think it's important to dress for success, and it definitely helped my school experience be a good one thanks to uniforms. It may be a small detail to some, but it proved to be effective at our school.

I don't know I did home school with my kids so that was not an issue as a mom. but as a child we were very poor so I did not have the clothes all the other kids had and I felt horrible. So I guess I would have to vote uniforms.....

Yeah uniforms make it easier because you don't have to worry about buying name-brand t-shirts and jeans and all that stuff. Everyone has to dress the same.

I hated uniforms with a passion. First of all in Sweden we don't have uniforms as it is seen to inhibit the students personal growth, which I agree with. I went to a private school inSpain where we had to wear uniforms in the shades of light to dark blue, great for the people that look good in those colors as a redhead I felt most unatractive since it's not one of my colors. It's sexist if they are forsing girls to wear only skirts. At that private school you could see how well of someone was by the car they where picked up in and what jewellery they had. I see your point, but I rather my kids get thought from a young age that money is not what gives you a good heart but whom you are does. Here they have some brilliant anti bulling techniques which I'm happy about.

Wow that's awesome that you lived in Spain! And well, I guess it depends on personal preference. I personally liked them.

Yes uniforms can really get rid of a lot of the issues associated with more lax dress codes.
