Solar Energy: Here Comes The Sun, Now We Can Cook

Since the beginning of time, Man has been alternately in awe and in fear of the sun. The great glowing orb in the sky has inspired songs, paintings and myths from every single culture on the planet. We have worshiped it, reviled it and hidden away from it.

Finally though, science came up with a way to harness some of its golden goodness and use the sun’s energy to power everything from our smallest calculators to entire buildings. Using solar energy is as simple as setting up a cell to collect this immeasurable power and then to convert it. Using solar energy is of course dependent on sunlight, so it is more doable in certain parts of the world than in others, but almost everybody can benefit from some solar energy.

We draw energy from the sun, first with our bodies. The human body uses Vitamin D from sunlight to metabolize calcium, a vital nutrient that contributes to strong and healthy bones and teeth. The sun warms our plants and coaxes them from the ground so that we can have food to eat. And now, we harness the power of the sunlight to power lights, heaters and other items during the dark of night. How many people have the solar powered lights gracing their landscapes?

A solar panel is the first step to harnessing the power of solar energy. We see the small versions of these panels on our calculators. Usually small and black window-like, these absorb the energy of the sun or other light and stores it to be used in lower light situations. If the cell did not gather enough light, the calculator will not work properly.

The bigger the power need, the bigger the cell will be. Once the power cell is full, it will either stop charging or in some cases the energy will be siphoned off to a secondary, storage cell. When the energy is needed a switch is used to turn the panel on. Depending on its size, these panels can run a small appliance, a room or in some cases an entire home.

Cooking with solar energy can be done with a homemade or purchased solar cooking box. Directions for building and using these handy items can be found on the Internet, and they can be very valuable for living as green as possible. Although some people find them ungainly and the cooking time too lengthy, if you plan your meal ahead of time, get the food into the box early enough, you can find that it works much better.

If you plan to try using a solar cooking box for yourself, it would be in your best interest to also check out recipes to use for cooking meals in these as well. Almost any food can be cooked using these, but there are of course, some adjustments that need to be made.

We have all used solar energy at some point, maybe without even realizing it. We have put our clothing on lines to dry in the sunshine. We have made batches of sun tea. The sun’s energy is there, it is powerful and it is free, so use it whenever possible.
