Sustainable Living: Keeping The Recycle Cycle Moving Along

Sustainable living is a fairly easy concept to understand. At its most simple level, it is simply keeping consumption at a level that will allow sources to regrow, be rebuilt or renew themselves at a steady rate. If a resource is over used, then it becomes in danger of disappearing or of becoming so expensive that the common man cannot use it. Sustainable living is one of the easiest concepts to keeping our world green and healthy and all it takes is a little common sense and a little planning to accomplish.

Some resources are non-renewable which means that they cannot be grown, developed or easily found again. Once the supplies of these resources are gone, they are gone, the end. Some resources are on the borderline between sustainable and non-sustainable - meaning that they could be developed or found again, but that the cost would be financially or environmentally disastrous.

Then there are renewable and sustainable resources which can be planted and cultivated again, found and used readily or easily recycled. Sustainable resources are those that do not dip below critical levels and then create hardship for the environment or for consumers.

Sustainable living can be a simpler way of living- leading consumers to use less of those resources and products that are not easily replaced. One of the easiest examples to follow is with money itself. Pretend you have twenty dollars. You know that you spend ¼ of that every day for lunch, ($5). If you know that your twenty dollars must last until your next paycheck which is two weeks away, you know number one that you can no longer afford to buy the same lunch you are used to.

Number two, you know that you will still have to eat every day. An adjustment must be made to the way that you eat and therefore the way that you live to make your money last until it is replenished. The same concept can be applied to natural resources as well. We know that some are in dwindling, diminished states and should be conserved as much as possible. If we all do our part to reduce the amount of this resource that we use, then the resource will be more likely to last until a new resource or a new source of this one is found.

Our fresh water sources are drying up, so we must conserve them as much as possible. Oil and coal supplies are dwindling so alternatives or new sources of them must be found as well. These must be safe to use, financially responsible and most importantly safe for the environment. The key concept here is to sustain- sustainable living hinges on finding ways to stretch existing resources and finding new ones, for the good of everyone.
