Google Places Listing Is More Important Then Your Business Website

Most business owners now realize they must have an Internet presence to stay competitive in their industry and a question they need to ask is what's more important, my website or my Google Places listing?

It's a proven fact that a huge percentage of consumers use the Internet to find a local business.

Do a search for any type of business; for example, carpet cleaners Medina, OH, and the first listings you'll usually see are Google Places listings.

Google constantly changes how many show at any given time but it’s usually between 7 and 10 Places listings. You can tell a Google Places listing by the little red bubbles/map markers that are next to the listing and on the little map on either side.

Above the Places listings are paid ads if there are any for that particular search term.

And below the listings are the organic listings or where websites and other content are listed.

Even if your website is ranked number 1 in the organic listings, it will still be below the Google Places listing. Doesn't it make sense to have your Google Places listing optimized to achieve the highest ranking possible?

Your website is important because it has your company information etc... and it's a citation but it will never out rank your Places listing.

Local business directory listings are important because they too are citations but they will never outrank your Places listing and they probably won't outrank your website either.

And it doesn't matter if you have a paid directory listing or not so it's suggested never pay for any local business directory listing as your money would be better spent using a professional to optimize your Places listing and your website.

To properly optimize your Google Places listing you must first follow all of Google's terms of service. Black Hat type optimization methods will work in the short term but eventually they will catch on and your Google Places listing will have dropped and will be buried so deep you'll never find it or your Places account will be banned.

And you'll want to list your company's attributes as well as a great company description of exactly the services or product your business provides.

Following Google's terms of service is not enough for a high ranking Places listing. You also need citations for your business.

A citation is any information found on the Internet that lists your business name, address, phone number and website address. It can literally be anything and the key is all the citations must have the exact same information.

Because a high ranking Google Places listing is so very important to a local business, it is strongly recommended that business owners hire a professional to optimize it.

Think of it this way; if consumers use the search term, lawn mower repair Medina, OH, (which has approximately 600 local searches per day) to find your business, if your Google Places listing is ranked number 1, you will receive about 420 (70%) of the clicks from those searchers.

If your Places rank is 4 or 5, you would receive about 42 of the clicks.

Of course not all clicks turn into a paying customer but wouldn’t you rather have a chance to get a new customer out of the 420 people looking at your Places listing then 40?

The Internet is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and 420 clicks turn into over 2900 per week which turns into over 12,700 clicks per month.

There is no possible argument for a local business not to have an optimized Google Places listing and any business would be well served using a professional company to handle that part of their Internet marketing.
