How Having An Uncommon Name Has An Advantage For SEO And Search Engine Results

When I got started with the internet and looking into starting an online business from home, one of the first things I learned was SEO and the importance of it. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it means ensuring that your web pages are accessible to search engines and focuses on ways to help improve the chances of your web pages being found. There are various ways that search engines operate, whether through crawler-based search engines or human-powered directories, one thing seems important and that is trying to have your web page get towards the top of the search engine results.

Obviously if you are one of the first results it is going to mean more traffic for your site. And more traffic means more people to purchase your product or service you offer. Getting ranked on a search engine such as Google isn't always easy. It does take some work to get to the top, but there are things you can do to work on getting there. The more you have exposure to your site through different sources, the better it will get ranked, but there are other elements they consider when figuring where you will be ranked.

An advantage of having an uncommon name such as Marla, my first name, is that there is less competition when working on search engine rank. While it doesn't mean I don't have to work on getting ranked better, there is not near the number of searches for something with a name that is not common. Just as an example when looking up only the name Marla, a google search shows 14 million, and looking up John, a much more common name, it brings up 2 billion search results!

Obviously you're probably not going to have just a name, but that is an example of the huge amount of difference in search engine competition. When I decided to name my site where I offer internet products that are free, Marla's Hangout, it was not long before it was ranked number one on Google search. While people are probably not going to look for free things by searching Marla's Hangout, if I tell someone that is the name of my site, and they can just type it in the search engine and it should come up, I have that small advantage. It would be much easier for someone to remember Marla's Hangout, as opposed to telling them the web address that includes an unfamiliar sound, plus the dot com.

There is heavy competition when it comes to the internet now. Just about every business today has a website. The better you can make your way to the top of search engines, the better chance of success you will have at drawing traffic to you and traffic usually results in more sales. The opportunity to have a name that is less common does have its advantages from time to time. And although that doesn't automatically put you at the top of a search engine, if you work at it, you can eventually work your way to the top.
