Is Do It Yourself (diy) SEO Possible?

SEO is the backbone of every website out there so it’s a necessity to have. Optimizing your site for SEO will make it more visible to your audiences and will show up higher in Google’s rankings for relevant search terms. SEO, however, can be a tricky and complicated subject if you don’t know anything about it - optimizing the site can also be a tiring process. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible to do so.

Many companies around the world have built their sites with the assistance of SEO companies and consultants, however, there are also a lot out there who prefer to optimize their sites themselves. It might be because the SEO companies they hired didn’t yield the results they wanted, the lack of budget, or they simply want to do the job themselves and learn the art of SEO in the process.

Whatever the reason, if you ever thought of wanting to employ a DIY SEO, well, then you’re not the first one to do so. That’s why I can confidently say DIY SEO isn’t an impossible task. And because you’re the one who knows your site and business best, then of course you would know what’s the best course of action for it. One fact about SEO is that it’s not wholly generalized - there are some optimizations to be made that’s unique to your site only and SEO companies might completely fail to see these.

For starters, here are a few tips for some DIY SEO.

On-Site Analysis

Do a routine check-up on your site. If you’ve at least got a grip on the SEO basics then you should be able to detect the anomalies present on your content, etc. However, if your site was already optimized, then you can check where the optimization stopped and start your SEO strategies there.

This is what SEO agencies do when they first get ahold of your site - they check everything first before they can start working on it. However, you can help yourself the trouble and cost of hiring them by doing this yourself. Try using tools to help you detect the problems - Traffic Travis, for example, can determine if you’ve put way too many H1 tags or you lack Alt Tags in a web page.

Get a Hold of Your Target Demographic

Meeting your clients in personal and understanding their behavior is way easier than tackling clients on the online side - usually, you can see a stark difference between the two. You have to put this into account and try to get an idea as to how you’re going to convert online traffic into profit. A good idea would be to study your online competition.

Find someone in your niche and try to study their actions, their website layout, social marketing campaigns, etc. And then try to apply the knowledge you’ve gained on your website.


One of the main concepts of SEO are keywords. Keywords will make Google understand what your site is all about and will rank you on search terms based on those. A common fact is that short tailed keywords (single word keywords) are more competitive compared to long tailed (composed of 3 or more words) ones. Though most sites will try to aim high on the short tailed ones, it’s also way harder and more expensive to do so.

Long tailed keywords, on the other hand, are easier to rank up and produce just as much traffic as the short tailed ones. Costwise, spending your effort here would be a better idea. A quote from Michael Lazar, TrueShip Shipping Software's "growth hacker" says “The shorter keywords are usually a lot more competitive, which means that other businesses are spending a lot of time, effort and money getting them to rank as they compete,”.

However, that doesn’t mean you should completely abandon shortail keywords. Try to use tools like Google Adwords to determine which keywords would work best for you. Knowing your clients would also help in giving you an idea as to which longtailed keywords you should apply as well. In short, mastering keyword phrases should be one of your main objectives.


Google isn’t so lenient compared to the days back then. Would would have been an acceptable SEO practice years ago would get you penalized in the search rankings today. Web content has seen the most obvious change and it would do well that you know this.

The first thing you should know is that keyword stuffing and spammy links placed all over the content is not a good thing. Quality, Authority and Natural - these are the qualities the links in your content should have. Outbound links coming from credible sites would get better results; links coming from sites relevant to your niche will provide good “juice”; and the overall quality of your content will make people and Google’s webcrawlers to register your site higher in the search rankings.


These are just some of the basic tips for DIY SEO. As you venture and study more SEO techniques, you can find more that you can apply to your site - tools, proven strategies and more. In the end you should also be able to provide a unique optimization for your site as well.
