Seo: Career For Communication Majors

A substantial part of last year’s college graduates are unemployed, and a lot more are going to join them this coming March and April. According to a study conducted by DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment), college grads and undergrads aged 15-24 years old comprises the 50.6% of the recorded 2.6M unemployed Filipinos. Among primary reasons cited for this poor employment rate are: skills/qualifications mismatch and; poor, uninformed choices for college degree programs. There are a lot of job vacancies to fill-in, but most students opt to go for courses which are already overpopulated.


SEO and Internet Marketing had become one of the most outsourced services worldwide. As one of the top provider of outsourced services, Philippines is currently on its way of growing its own base of SEO industry. A lot of Internet Marketing companies (both Filipino and foreign-owned) had already found their spot in the Philippines, and more are expected to come by the end of 2015.

The SEO industry in the Philippines is very promising. But because there’s no direct or specialized SEO courses or degrees offered in Universities, there’s practically no clean-cut path for entering this career. There are, however, several college majors that SEO companies are rooting for when they look for someone to fit with SEO shoes.

And one of the selected few are those with degrees in Communication.


Most comm majors after their graduation look for careers in the TeleComm industry (most of them apply for journalist, writer, researcher, or productions position), while a several few would venture for Sales, Marketing, and Corporate Communications field.

The part that they don’t realize, however, is that there is a richer and more potent industry that they can go to. Because the SEO in Philippines is relatively young, comm graduates doesn’t know about it and it’s promise of profitability and career growth if they’ll choose to go for this industry. If they only knew about the salaries of SEO writers and specialists, they wouldn't think about going to other industries.


Communication Skills

The SEO tasks and responsibilities usually includes creation of high-quality contents (articles, ezines, images, and videos) that target specific keywords, SEO-effective headlines, and persuasive contents. That’s why as much as possible, SEO professionals should have technical, creative, and relational writing skills.

The popular belief is that IT and Computer Science are the best courses for SEO. On, the contrary they aren’t. Search Engine Optimization, and Internet Marketing per se, is not just about developing programs or deciphering algorithms. More than technical and computer skills, Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization needs people who can conduct goal-oriented communication campaigns.

Social Science Research

An SEO writer or specialist must be able to identify the keywords that receives the highest hits from Search Engine users, the most important sites to link into, and the type of content that people read and search for Online. They constantly track competitors and monitor Niche market behavior to ensure that the SEO strategy is headed towards the right direction.

That’s why someone who has background in social science research is most desirable for an SEO roles. In particular, they must have experience in conducting consumer and market research, or studies for popular culture, media.

Relational Skills

Not that graduates from other courses don’t have relational skills. As far as human beings are concerned, relational skills are acquired even before we have gone into high school.

But with regard to Internet Marketing and SEO profession, the requirement for relational skills goes beyond interpersonal and small group communication. As an SEO professional, you don’t just communicate with a neighbor or a long time friend. You are speaking with several peoples across the globe, and the span of your audience is almost unlimited.

That’s why it’s better to have Communication graduates as SEO specialists: they have proper background on public and intercultural communication.
