How To Choose The Right Knife

Choosing the right knife may not be as easy as you might think.

What brand of knife is the best? What type of knife should you use for the task you are performing? How well is the knife made and is it worth the cost?

Those are a couple of the questions you might ask on how to choose the right kinfe when you are doing your knife research. Well, I think the first one you should answer is what type of knife do you need.

This is how to choose the right knife the job you are performing. If you are slicing bread you should use a bread knife. These knives have a 8" to 9" serrated edge perfect for slicing through the tough crust.

Next are the paring knives with 3" to "4 blades that are generally used for more intricate work . They allow for better handling for peeling fruits and vegetables, removing pits from olives, or even the eyes from potatoes.

Boning knives are used to remove meat from the bones. Some have different stiffness and width of blades. Use the narrow for ribs and chops, wide for chicken and pork, and the curved for working around an angle.

How to choose the right knife for chopping and slicing can come down to two types of chefs knives. There is the common chef knife which you can find with different size blades and the Santoku knife.

There is the carving and slicing knives that are longer and thinner for getting more precise and clean cuts when slicing meats. The blade is much thinner as well.

Cleavers are a great knife for heavier meats and small bones that you need to cut through. This requires more of a chopping motion.

The utility knife is like a small chefs knife. You can use it pretty much the same way you use the chefs knife just for smaller items.

So how to choose the right knife for the job is not quite as hard as choosing the brand. I will first say, if you are serious about cooking and you really want a great knife, pay for it. Knives are one of those things you just can't go cheap on.

You can really tell the difference in a well made knife or a cheap one. Every brand of knife has it's own features. I recommend reading some knife reviews and do some research.

You can find some really awesome sets with blocks that will have many of the knives you will use on a daily basis in the set. How to choose the right knife really depends on what you are looking for in the knife.

Thanks for your time and let me know if you have any questions!
