Merrell Trail Glove Review

The Merrell Trail Glove is a minimalist running shoe aimed at the barefoot running market, however I've found them great for just walking around town. I bought a pair in April 2011 after picking up an ankle injury towards the end of 2010, and after researching cures on the internet I read that going "barefoot" helps strengthen the ankles and legs so I thought I'd give it a go... I've not been disappointed.

Why buy a pair of shoes for going "barefoot"? Well I'd love to go "proper skin to the pavement" barefoot, but a few things put me off, the first being that I don't like things puncturing my skin (which is a real danger whilst walking / running the streets), and secondly I don't want to look like a weirdo!

The Merrell Trail Gloves are great as there is no raised-sole, so you are connecting with the ground as if you weren't wearing shoes. I've just been walking around in them for about a month (with some very short jogs as my ankle isn't 100% healed yet) and I've really noticed the increase in my calf strength. I can't wait to get running and take full advantage as I'm definitely "sold" on barefoot running.

The build quality of the Trail Glove is excellent, which I expected from Merrell anyway as I had a pair of Merrell Chameleon's a few years ago and they lasted forever. I'd looked at other "barefoot" shoes before buying these, namely the Vibram Five Fingers, but the build quality was nowhere near as good is the Merrell Trail Glove's.

As I'd never worn "barefoot" shoes before they felt weird to start with, but that's just because I'm so used to wearing normal shoes. Now, here's a piece of advice you'll hear all over the place when looking at "barefoot" shoes (Merrell even includes a leaflet in the box saying the same thing) and that's it takes time for your body to adjust to going "barefoot". My calves ached after wearing these shoes for a day, and it took almost 2 weeks until this stopped happening. It's just your body adjusting to the new demands so don't buy a pair and go for a 10 mile run! If you gradually ease in to them you'll reap the benefits, and like I said earlier, my ankles and calves are definitely stronger as a result.

So, would I recommend the Merrell Trail Glove's to a friend? Absolutely, they've definitely helped me with my ankle injury (plus they look cool!).

I hope you've found my Merrell Trail Glove review helpful,

All the best,

Matt
