Midweek Jamaican Market

My friend Pablo and I visited the Christiana midweek market on Wednesday the 6th of July 2011 to purchase mutton, spices, green bananas and yellow yam; in preparation for a party.

Pablo likes fashion and was also keen to get a pair of leather shoes, which were the latest craze.

The traditional Jamaican market had evolved over the past four decades from a place where one would go to buy fruits, ground provisions, vegetables, meat and spices to one where a wide variety of household items, like pots, utensils, mats, mops, electronic items like toasters, blenders, CD and DVD players can be purchased . Also readily available are items for decorations and clothing ranging from wigs which have become immensely popular, clips, hats, and necklaces, cosmetic items, deodorant sprays and perfumes to jeans pants, shorts, undergarments, slippers and shoes.

The Christiana market is opened, practically, every day. But, traditionally, Wednesdays and Fridays are the busiest days with a hustle and bustle of activities because on these days the farmers and vendors from the surrounding communities and distant regions would bring their produce to market.

We arrived in town at about 11 a.m. It was a fairly sunny day and the town was already crowded with people, a host of cars and buses and the trucks and pickups which were off loading produce at the market.

A wide variety of ground provisions, fruits, vegetables and spices were on display. These included green bananas, breadfruits, cassava, dasheen, Irish potatoes, pumpkins, yellow yams, and fruits such as mangoes, oranges, limes, pears, plums, naseberries, plantains, ripe bananas, sweetsops, sour sops and melons. Vegetables and other items included cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, carrots, okra, sweet peppers , tomatoes, red peas, and the traditional herbs and spices like nutmegs, gingers, hot peppers, garlic, onions, scallions and thymes. Meat products like beef, fish, mutton and pork are usually in a section closer to the rear of the market.

The excitement in the air was palpable and the aromas from all these different produce were impregnating the atmosphere. There was chattering all around and people kept bumping into each other in and around the market. Bus conductors were calling in loud melodious voices to woo potential passengers. Music blared from buses and different sections of the market, playing the latest reggae and dancehall hits. Vendors, who were strategically located at the entrance to the market, kept beckoning persuasively to customers.

‘Hi nice lady, come and buy something from me’.

‘What a way you look pretty! These ear rings would fit you well’.

‘What a handsome young man!’

‘Yes, it’s you me talking, come and buy some green bananas and yellow yam. You don’t want to have stamina and run fast like Usain Bolt?’

‘Come gentle people, the fruits are nice and at the right price’.

We smiled and passed the vendors at the entrance and went deep within and purchased the items we needed at bargain prices.

My friend Pablo was lucky and got a pair of leather shoes for half the price they were selling in the stores.
