Gone Camping

It was starting to get dark and Jeff has been gone a long time. Jeff said he was going to do a little afternoon hunting and would be back before dark. Kay was starting to get really worried. She is not an experienced camper, but Jeff said after a few trips, she is going to love camping. The fire is starting to go out and it was getting cold. Kay thought she had better put some wood on the fire and keep it going. She thought she should lite the lantern. It was really dark up in these mountains at night. She put another sweater on to warm up a little. She was chewing on a piece of jerky, wondering what could have happened to Jeff to make him so late.

Kay and Jeff work at the same restaurant. Jeff is a chef and Kay is an accountant. They liked each other right from the start and had been dating about 4 months now. Another couple, Bob and Sue work at the restaurant too, and they are coming up to camp tomorrow morning.

It is now 9.00 pm and Jeff is still not back. It is getting very dark so Kay put more wood on the fire and lights the lanturn so it was not so dark. What could be keeping Jeff from coming back to camp? He is a very good hunter, Kay reassures herself. She is really frightened by now, its dark and noises are everywhere. There is a gun in camp, but she knows nothing about guns. The truck is in camp but Jeff has the keys.

I better put more wood on the fire and get a little something to eat. Cheese and crackers is good. She thinks of how she could look for Jeff, but it was dark now and then there would be two lost. She hears a noise, brush braking, low grunts and snorts, and they are getting closer. Kay gets in the truck and locks the doors. Kay hears more noises and then there is a dark shadow at the edge of the camp. It's moving closer and then, oh my god, it's a bear. It's a black bear. It's not too big but it's big enough to scare Kay. Kay is so terrified she tries to scream, but nothing comes out. Now she is shaking as she watches the bear rip up the tent with one swipe of its paw. The bear rummages around until it finds the food chest. He bats and knocks the chest around until it spills the food all over the ground. The bear eats the bread, rapper and all. Before long, all the food was gone. Now the bear is going through all the camping gear looking for more food . Everythings scattered all about the clearing. It looks like the city dump.

Then the bear sees Kay in the truck. She is just frozen with fear. The bear gets up on the hood of the truck and paws and bats at the cab and the window. If he gets in the truck I'm dead, thinks Kay. The bear tries to get in the truck and gets tired of that and gets down. He flings everything all about and finally he leaves.

Kay stays in the truck, afraid the bear might come back. Soon the sun comes up and Kay had fallen asleep for a short nap. By now Kays worried sick about Jeff and wonders what could have happened to him ....... trying not to think of bad things. If he is still gone when Bob and Sue come up, we can go to find him then.

Kay is still in the truck and does not want to get out. Nature is calling and so she thinks she will not go far from the truck. Then while she is out she thinks she will get a drink. I don't think the bear got the drinks. Aaah the cola tastes good. Kay thinks she should pick up some of the trash from the bear but decides to get back in the truck. Where is Jeff?

It was about 10.00am by now and Bob and Sue drove into camp in their jeep. Oh man, what happened here? Kay told them about Jeff being gone all night and about the bear. Wow, Jeff has been gone that long? Yea, and I 'm worried sick. Bob was going to look for Jeff . So we unloaded their jeep and waited. Hoping for the best. We picked up some of the trash when Bob came back. I found Jeff, but he is hurt. He said Jeff fell and broke his wrist and ankle on the right side. Oh my God, where is Jeff now? we asked. I got him to the road so we can go in the truck and get him. I got the keys. We will get him help and then we will come back for the stuff.

When we got to Jeff, he was so happy to see us. He looked so tired and miserable. He was in a lot of pain. We took Jeff to the rangers station and they called for transport to a hospital for Jeff. When we got back to camp it was almost dark so we decided to stay till morning and go Home then.

You know this was my first camping trip, said Kay and I'll never forget it. I sure can't say it was boring!

Well, that's it for now See you soon?

Wow. Quite a story! Thanks for sharing. You remind me of two bear stories of my own. 'Tis scary, isn't it? One was camping, a wounded bear. I was fortunate that I had nothing smelly around and was able to stay stock-still, so the bear skipped by me after a bit, not disturbing the tent platform I was standing on. I went a different way though... to where the bear was heading... because it was a Girl Scout camp and I figured the little kids were on the bear's path. And not as clean about food... got them and their counselors into a nearby cabin. Still, scary!! Later was when we found out bear was wounded... scarier then;) Another was with my family, up in Maine, where my dad grew up. He got us OUT of the fishing FAST when a baby bear found us. So we got AWAY before Mama bear figured out we were between her and her baby;) You tell such a wonderful way. Great story telling makes for the story. You've got that down in such a great way. Bravo! Good job.
