In this article we will cover the world of beatrix potter, probably the most well-known children's author ( and artist ) ever. The world of Beatrix Potter started in Victorian England where she did not go to school - she was taught at home when Her brother was sent to school to be tutored. As well as studying at home she took part in art lessons which involved her painting pictures of the surrounding countryside and nature.
Beatrix Potter was said to have been a quite shy little girl and this could well have been down to the fact that she did not have that much contact with other children due to her home schooling. She immersed herself into painting and became very skilled at painting nature - a theme that would crawl into her books and the rest of her life. There was a schoolroom in her parents house used for teaching and in this room herself and Bertram ( her brother ) kept many different varieties of pets. These pets were drawn/painted on a daily basis and led to the illustrations you see in Potter's books today.
The world of beatrix potter really took off when she wrote a story for a sick little boy she knew and called it 'The Tale Of Peter Rabbit'. This remained a story for one little boy until 1901 when Beatrix had 250 copies of the book printed before the Christmas period. Two weeks later she was completely sold out and had to get another 200 copies printed - the world of beatrix potter really had taken off.
The book was an instant success and proper publication was soon to follow. Frederick Warne & Co. published 8000 copies and success followed with another incredible 22 titles which followed and the money she earned allowed her to purchase a farm in the Lake District in England called 'Hill Top Farm'. It's hard to imagine the success the world of Beatrix Potter has had since she published her first story over a century ago. At the end of the day she was a very clever businesswomen who had complete control over her product and her success. In 1903 she actually had a 'teddy' or 'soft toy' created in the image of Peter Rabbit - this became the first ever licensed character. The world of Beatrix Potter is a wonderful place for children and adults alike to spend time. Her characters will live forever in every child's imagination.
Thank you Chris for this information about Beatrix Potter. Despite the position of women at the time she certainly made her mark. I think her depiction of the characters in all her books is simply stunning.
