Where's Betty

It was the spring of 1931 and times were very hard. After the stock market crashed, money was scarce. Many families could not feed their children. One of the casualties of the times was baby Betty June. Her mom and dad could not feed her so they gave her up to the sisters of Mercy childrens home. Betty was one month old. There was very little food for the babies, mostly mush and dry milk. Betty was at the childrens home for about 9 months, when a couple wanted to adopt her. Their names were Arnold and Lea Gordon. Having no children of their own the were eager to get her. Having had little food for the first nine months of her life, Betty was mentaly slow. Physically she was in good health.

Arnold was a stern task master. Betty really had to tow the mark. Lea was not easy to please either. Betty always did as she was told. Life was not easy for her, but she kept her complaints to her self. Things went on the same through her childhood. It was a very lack luster life, but Betty endured. Growing up a little slow and plain was not easy either.

She did average work in school, so she got a job in a department store. She was still in her parents home at 20, when she met a man at her work. His name was Bruce Wilson. He had a really good job. They saw each other a few months and finally they married. Betty was so glad to leave her folks home. She hoped it would be a better life being married to Bruce.

After a few months of marriage, Betty knew this was not a better life. Bruce did not want her to work, just stay home and keep house. Bruce gave Betty an allowance to stick to. He was very tight with his money. No joy in life at all.

Betty used to talk to a man across the street when Bruce was at work. His name was John Sherman. Soon John wanted to take Betty away from her unhappy life. They staarted to plan their get away. They decided to meet at a restaurant when Bruce was at work.

Betty took nothing with her. No clothes, no money, only a credit card and the truck. She met John at the restaurant and John followed her in the car. They left the truck in the next town over.

Hours later Bruce came home to find an empty house. No Betty. Where was Betty? The truck was gone but nothing else was missing. No clothes, all her personal things were still there. Whaat's going on? Bruce called the police and they were baffled too. They checked the bank accounts, money was all there. No note, No phone calls, what happened? Bruce did not know about Bettys' credit card.

The truck was found in the next town over, parked. The doors were unlocked and the keys were left in the truck. There was no blood, no sign of foul play in the truck. They were really stumped. What could have happened? Bruce even hired a private investigater to look for Betty but he hit a dead end. After a while the trail dried up. Bruce said there was nothing more he could do to find Betty.

Years go by and still no word of Betty. Maybe she's dead...Two states away from Bruce, lives a couple named Betty and John Sherman. They have just moved in this small town so no one knows them yet, but they seem to be a very happy couple.
