If you're fulfilling a lifelong dream to travel to Sweden to see the Aurora Borealis, you'll want to ensure you give yourself the very best chance of getting the ultimate sighting. Naturally, location is the most important element.

The Abisko Sky Station in Sweden is renowned as one of the very best places in the world to see the Aurora Borealis and, located in the heart of the Abisko National Park in Swedish Lapland, its reputation is growing. Surrounded by the park, this stunning region is far from any artificial interference from other light sources. If you visit between November and March when the skies are at their darkest you will have the best chance of witnessing the magnificent and truly memorable Aurora Borealis.

Why the Sky Station?

The Sky Station was constructed in Abisko National Park in order to make the most of the superb location. Benefitting from prevailing winds that keep cloud cover to a minimum, the skies here are beautifully clear, providing wonderful sightings most nights - as long as the conditions in the Earth’s upper atmosphere are conducive. As well as clear skies, there is also the advantage of the location being so remote. High up in the mountains, the Sky Station is in the perfect place for uninterrupted viewing.

About the Sky Station

Your Northern Lights experience begins as you are whisked up to the summit on a chairlift to arrive at the Abisko Sky Station. As you ascend, the silence of the national park surrounds you and a million stars light your way to the top. When you get to the station, you’ll stay warm inside as you gaze out of the large windows and wait for the spectacular performance to begin. When the lights do grace you with their presence, you can venture outside to the expansive deck for a closer look.

When visiting the Abisko Sky Station you will undoubtedly be spending some time outdoors, and it can get extremely cold in Sweden. You'll need to wrap up warm with Arctic rated clothing (this will be provided if you're on an organised tour). For the full experience, you can indulge in a delicious three-course dinner while waiting for the lights to make an appearance, and you can also explore the small but informative Borealis exhibition.

Abisko is the ideal choice of destination to experience a sighting of the magnificent Aurora Borealis. With excellent records of sightings, the superbly well organised Sky Station, and plenty of knowledgeable guides on hand should you want one, it has all the elements you need to make your once-in-a-lifetime dream holiday come true.

Kevin Collins is director of Aurora Nights, a company offering a select range of once in a lifetime holidays to see the Northern Lights. For the best Aurora Borealis hunting holidays, Iceland and Swedish Lapland offer an excellent opportunity. Aurora Nights is part of Weekend a la Carte, a family-run company with vast in-depth knowledge based on extensive travels, and passionate about giving superb client service.
