How to Be Eco - friendly on Ski Vacation

Activities at ski vacation destinations tend to be less favorable to the environment. For skiers and snowboarders, snow-capped mountains mean fun flying to a the summit, driving up to the hillside, taking the lifts that move past snow cannons and eventually landing on well-groomed piste. But fun as these may sound, such activities are not always good for the planet. Fortunately, there are some things that can be done to make snow sports more eco-friendly.

A pro-environment ski vacation starts with your choice of transportation. When planning your trip, consider what type of transportation you’d take to get to your destination. Take note that flying can be really fast and convenient but it produces the biggest amount of carbon dioxide that is harmful for the environment. In case you have no option other than fly, at least choose an airline that offers emission offset programs like Carbon Clear as well as Climate Care. These airline companies still pump out CO² but at least they have carbon saving activities that result to reduced carbon footprints.

Truth be told, all forms of transportation leaves behind carbon footprints but these are typically smaller compared than that of flying. In lieu of planes, holiday makers can travel to the Alps by train – a less convenient, but nonetheless, more affordable travel option. Skiers and snowboarders eyeing to spend ski vacations in Val D’Isere, for instance, can take an overnight snow train from London St Pancras and stops in Moutiers, Aime la Plagnge, and Bourge St Maurice. What makes this alternative a better option is that it does not involve long queues and airport security, so vacationers travel easily while those who took the planes are still trying to sort things out with the French baggage handler who could have forwarded their gears and equipment to Cancun or other ski destinations.

Those looking for even more eco-friendly travel alternatives can always take the reliable bus. This mode of transportation is a lot more affordable than snow trains and planes and is also more environmentally sound. Companies like Snow Express provide round-the-clock journeys to the Alps for only £45.

The quest for eco-friendly ski vacations does not start and end with your choice of travel. Vacationers can further help the environment by booking shared transfer to minimize impact on the resort.

Other pro-environment measures when going on ski trip include choosing and wearing organic ski clothing as well as using eco-friendly wax on skis and snowboards.
