Are Tanning Beds Safer Than Natural Sun?

With all the emphasis on safe sunning and the dangers of ultraviolet rays, many people have chosen to get a healthy tanning glow in what may actually be a most unhealthy way – the use of a tanning bed or tanning salon.

Statistics show that tanning beds are actually more of a contributing factor to a future diagnosis of skin cancer – specifically basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas, which risks are shown to increase significantly after using tanning beds according to a National Cancer Institute Journal article.

Tanning equipment emits mostly UVA rays. UVA rays do not cause sunburn, however, studies show that UVA rays are a cause of melanoma, which is listed as the deadliest of all known cancers. In fact, ultraviolet radiation is considered so dangerous that international cancer experts have placed tanning beds and all sources of ultraviolet radiation into the list of top cancer risks. This makes them recorded as being as deadly as arsenic or mustard gas.

The most prevalent form of cancer as diagnosed within the United States is Skin Cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is the most probable common form of melanoma. It is recorded as the diagnosis in around 90% of skin cancers within the U.S. Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growth cancer. It does not spread to other parts of the body except in very rare cases. Basal cell carcinoma begins by forming deep in the basal cells, which are located along the bottom of the skin's outer layer - the epidermis. Basal cells are more common in men as they age. While tanning beds are a major contributing factor to the increase of this type of cancer, severe sunburns can also be a contributing factor and care should be taken when one is in the sun to avoid burning.

According to Lancet Oncology, who conducted over 20 studies with ultraviolet radiation and tanning, they found that the risk of cancer jumps to 75% if the individual began tanning in tanning beds prior to the age of 30. The cancer, melanoma, is now the deadliest kind of skin cancer in Great Britain. It is also documented in that country as being the leading cancer diagnosed for women in their 20s. This is unusual as until recently, skin cancer rates were highest as recorded in populations of people over 75.

Previously, studies indicated people who regularly use tanning beds were at eight to nine times higher a risk to get melanoma over those who hadn't used tanning beds. The World Health Organization has operated campaigns to raise awareness among young people worldwide concerning the dangers of using tanning beds and the risks of ultraviolet radiation. The American Cancer Society has stepped up efforts recently to get people to use self-tanning creams and lotions rather than tanning beds to get a healthy golden glow.
