Does Olive Oil Help Acne Scars?

You might be asking the question does Olive Oil help acne scars? Olive Oil is of course that beautifully fruity and delicious oil that I like to cook things with but many people have asked the question does it help acne scars? After all, it is a beautiful oil that makes the skin feel wonderful after using it. Every time I make focaccia bread (which uses a lot of Olive Oil) my hands always feel really good! So it can help the skin this way... but acne scars?

No. Sorry. Olive Oil doesn't work. It may make the skin smoother and softer than before but unless your skin is especially dry and can be helped by such an application of something to make it softer then it will not help to fade acne scars. I don't even recommend that you use it for softening up your skin - use a good quality natural moisturizer that will be far kinder to your skin rather then rubbing lots of oil into it. Extra Virgin oil is of course the better option in the kitchen, but no difference is made when using it on the skin.

Now, to help acne scars you need a combination of exfoliation, of softening the skin and regenerating the parts that need regenerating. Olive Oil unfortunately cannot do this.

You might be saying about this time if it softens up the skin - surely that's a good thing? Why not use it? For the same reason that you got acne in the first place (at least one of the contributing factors). Oil. When the skin is full of toxins it breaks out. While you may have tried like crazy to wash and clean the skin so that it doesn't have any oil (and discovered that it was those pesky hormones at work) rubbing oil into the skin won't help the scarring and could in fact make it more likely the outbreaks could occur.

OK, so we've established that Olive Oil does not help acne scars. So is there anything that you can use it for? Well you can use it for earwax problems if you have that... it does work quite well for that! But in terms of fading acne scars, you are better off with better solutions. While a small application of the oil (spot testing only please) probably won't end in disaster, you are better off saving the oil for frying and the focaccia breads in the kitchen. There are far better solutions to helping your acne scars.
