Get That Fresh Faced Look! How to Exfoliate Your Skin at Home

If your skin is looking rougher than a gravel road, or duller than an episode of According to Jim (for those that don't know it, picture the worst sitcom ever) then it may be time to pull out the scrub and exfoliate your skin at home. However if you have sensitive skin like I do, you don't want to be just attacking your face with any old piece of sand paper lying around.

Your skin works pretty hard all day protecting your body from outside pollutants, toxins and effects of the sun and wind. For this reason, it cops a fair old beating itself and can be prone to drying out, flakiness or sensitivity. Exfoliation helps to remove the dead and damaged skin cells from your outer layer of skin, letting the new healthy stuff make its way to the surface.

This can leave you with softer, smoother and more supple skin, and can have a great impact on reducing the signs of ageing. There are a number of different alternatives available depending on your skin's sensitity, and it can be a bit daunting knowing which way to go. The method outlined below is the one I use, and is great for sensitive skin around the face and neck. For this reason it's also perfect for anyone that has never experienced any form of exfoliation previously.

Step One - Always Cleanse First!

Wet a face cloth with warm water, and apply to your face and neck for 1 to 2 minutes to open up your pores. (this actually feels awesome after a long day at work, even without the exfoliating) Once this is done, gently wash your face with an alcohol and fragrance free cleanser

Step Two - Time to Make our super-cheap Exfoliator

This literally takes seconds so don't freak out.. Combine 3 tablespoons of plain white sugar with 1 tablespoon of water in a bowl. (you can use a coarser sugar down the track if you want something a bit stronger) Stir with your a spoon, your fingers, whatever you have lying around until it turns almost paste-like.. and we're done!

Step Three - You Guessed it, It's Going on your Face now

Use your fingers to rub the paste over your skin using small circular motions. If you feel like you need some extra muscle behind your scrub, you can apply the paste to a loofah or rough cloth and then apply as before. (fingers work fine for me though, and they make it much easier to cover every nook and cranny on your face)

Step Four - Rinsing Time

Rinse the paste off with lukewarm water, followed by a quick splash of cold water to close your pores. A little disclaimer here.. I will not be held accountable for the many bugs that will undoubtedly come after you if you don't wash the sugar thoroughly off your face, so just make sure you do it properly. Pat dry with a clean towel, and high five! You've successfully completed your DIY exfoliating!

Is it Right for You?

If you feel like your skin condition goes a little deeper than the superficial layers, you may need to look at something a little more intense such as a chemical facial peel to penetrate to the problems deeper beneath the surface.

Get some skincare advice from a professional, but certainly give this treatment a go first.. really quick and simple, and will do wonders for your skin if you can implement it into your routine a few times a week. This will work really well for top level impurities and imperfections in the skin and hopefully get you that 'fresh face' look that has been missing from your life!
