Hazards Of Cosmetics And Personal Care Products

It is difficult to find one who does not use at least one cosmetic product now days. People are so much concerned about their look and outfit that the market is flooded with different cosmetic products from various manufacturers. From simple talcum powders to complex makeup materials, perfumes, hair dyes, shampoos, nail polishes, toothpaste and similar cosmetics we can find lots of chemicals used in many personal care products used by almost everybody. Are they all safe? Does it pose any danger to those who use it on regular basis? Are hair dressers, cosmetologists, manicurists and other people who work with cosmetics exposed to dangerous chemical reactions?

I cannot use any talcum powders, perfumes and deodorants on my body as they result in skin rashes and allergies. I get small boils on my head which last almost two to three days after using an antidandruff shampoo of a popular brand. Luckily I am using the shampoo only once in a week. This prompted me to do a study on the side effects of some of the common personal care products we use on a daily basis and I am shocked to find the results. I am almost bald with partial and total hair loss at many spots on my head.

If we do a research on the health hazards of cosmetic products on people who work daily with the cosmetic products, we can find that the study conducted by University of California has revealed the dangers of finding malignant bone tumor in such people. The reports say that suspected products include hair dyes, detergents, nail polish, shampoos, hair conditioners etc. So, if they are in danger then what about those who use them?

There are hundreds and thousands of brands, original and look alike available in the market. Originals may be claimed to have undergone various skin tests and got certifications making them fit for use on human beings. But where do we find quality control tests for the duplicate products? Since the original products will be very costly, most of us turn to cheaper ones ending up in duplicate products exposing ourselves to health hazards.

Adulteration is one of the ways how one can produce cheaper versions of cosmetic products. There are various adulterants available depending upon the products. We get skin rashes, itching and other skin diseases by using cheap talcum powders. Some even use talcum powders on their genitals which has a risk of ovarian cancer.

Facial make-up is a must for even daily dressing and the make-up material may contain aluminum which is harmful to human body. Aluminum makes the make-up last longer.

Fragrances are found to be allergens in cosmetic products like perfumes and deodorants. Preservatives are used in cosmetics to increase their shelf life which otherwise will get contaminated with bacteria. These preservatives could break down when we are out in the sun due to temperature thus building up bacteria.

Coal-Tar colour is used in personal care products. They are cancerous in animals but less harmful in human beings.

We use petroleum derived products like petroleum jelly on our skin thinking that they will protect us from skin ageing and rashes. But what they do in turn is to prevent respiration. It is advisable to use plant oils like almond oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil etc. instead of petrochemicals.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration) states that the Natural and Organic cosmetics are simply chemical-packed products in disguise. The consumer regulation on cosmetic products is very weak and inefficient. FDA does not have enough power in regulating ingredients found in the personal care products.

There are several products available in the market for skin care against wrinkles, acne pimples and associated scars, skin blemishes etc. Two main types of acids are used in the production of these commonly used skin care products. They are Alpha Hydroxyl Acid and Beta Hydroxyl Acid which could result in burning sensation, pain and swelling on people who use such products. The degree of reaction may vary person to person.

Nail polishes use industrial plasticizers like Phthalates which give them increased flexibility. But medical analysis shows that phthalates could be harmful to cause a range of birth defects.

Shampoos may contain “Sodium Lauryl Sulfate” (SLS) which causes premature hair loss, burning sensation, headache and nausea. Anti Dandruff Shampoos may also contain coal-tar even though not listed in the ingredients list on their label. SLS is commonly used in floor cleaners and car wash soaps. This is a skin irritant. It can also have a long term side effect on humans.

Diethanolomine, abbreviated as DEA is one of the common and toxic chemical ingredient found in the personal care products such as soaps and detergents DEA is said to be linked to kidney and liver damages. Once it is absorbed by our tissues, it is difficult to excrete them. They mostly get accumulated in the fatty tissues.

Sodium Fluoride is one of the main ingredients of the common toothpaste we use every day. Fluorides can even cause death in human beings depending upon the dosage of the intake. Our skin and mucous membrane in the mouth absorb the fluorides. It is not necessary to swallow toothpaste to create side effects.

To my surprise, when I checked the shampoo we use for years together, contain almost 35 ingredients, most of them chemicals compounds. I could see chemicals that are discussed in this article used in the shampoo that I use.

The advertisements that we see on Television and other print media make us believe that these personal care products are safe to use and claim to give quick results. But they never tell us the side effects or health hazards of using such products.

They all leave it on us to test and experience. Check your personal care products before you buy as they are supposed to take care of your health rather than making you exposed to highly reactive chemicals that put us in danger. You will be able to get enough information from various articles and medical journals published on different web sites.
