Heat Rash Be Gone!

The symptoms of heat rash are unmistakable after being exposed to the sun and/or heat. Heat rash occurs when sweat ducts are blocked causing the skin to become inflamed and irritated. Sometimes, you can’t help but to scratch the itch.

However, if you are scratching that itch and the open skin comes in contact with harmful staph or strep bacteria, it can lead to secondary infections like impetigo which is contagious. There are many all natural ways to help relieve and heal heat rash; I have provided a list that I hope will be helpful to you.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is very cooling and soothing with a bit of a sticky feel. Aloe vera gel can be obtained from the aloe plant. Pop off or trim a leaf and apply the gel to the affected area. Cold aloe vera gel from the fridge will provide even more relief and soothing affect. By the way, if you want a nice exfoliation, the leaf can be used as a scrub (so don’t throw it away).

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil straight from the jar will calm the itch and reduce the swelling. Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that will help the body combat any harmful microbes that may have entered the skin from scratching.

Lactobacillus

Lactobacillus is one of the good guys of bacteria that are found in yogurt. Although, I would not suggest purchasing your family’s favorite flavored yogurts to apply to a heat rash instead opt for an organic plain yogurt.

Calendula

Calendula works to reduce the inflammation that can accompany heat rash. A salve can be made by mixing 1 cup of dried calendula petals with ¼ cup of grated beeswax, 1 ½ cup of olive oil and 35 drops of lavender oil. This salve is also works great as an eczema treatment.

Prevention

To avoid having a heat rash altogether, then best treatment is prevention. Here is a list of actions you can take to prevent this irritating rash during the summertime:

  • Avoid wearing tight fitting clothing
  • Wear loose fitting cotton clothing
  • Stay cool with a fan, air conditioning or a tall glass of cold lemonade
  • Be courageous and make your bath water cool and use soap that does not dry the skin out
  • Don’t sleep with heavy blankets, keep your bed as cool as possible

Here is to hoping that you can say farewell to heat rash are at least see you later. The prevention methods can also work for diaper rash and sweat rash as well. Please remember to test an area of skin before applying any new recipe or product you or your child’s body. If the rash persists or gets worse after treatment, please consult your health care provider. As always, enjoy the journey and take charge of your family’s health!
