Home Remedies For Dry Skin In Winter

Does your skin dry out in winter? For me every year the same problem pops up at some point, sore stretched skin and lips so raw they don’t need any added color, already a fetching shade of cherry red and cracking beautifully! The rest of the face doesn’t do so well either, a flaky forehead and an overall sallow color under fluorescent lights has been known lead to all the mirrors in the house getting covered up.

If you have a skin care routine you stick with then the above probably won’t apply, but if like me you get tired and a bit pressed for time over the festive season, these things can easily slip, that and being too close to a gritting truck - which I promise won’t catch on as a facial scrub.. Only when you survey the damage do you realize the importance of caring for a human’s biggest organ, our skin.

So What Can You Do?

I’d advise a two-pronged attack, one aimed at the short term and also something to improve your skin today, plus making changes in your diet that will impact positively on your skin in a month or two, just in time for spring!

Long Term Changes

It has taken me years to realize that it really is true, we are what we eat. Radiant skin and a glowing complexion can’t come out of a bottle, tube or pot of cream. Unless the basic foundation for growth of new skin is there in the form of a good varied diet, you’ll never reach that truly radiant look that you’re striving for, because your lotions and potions don't have enough to work with.

There is a huge variety of vitamins and complex minerals our skin needs to stay healthy and unless we attend to those first, no amount of expensive skin care preparations are going to help one bit.

Don’t panic! We need to eat a healthy balanced diet which includes plenty of vitamin C rich fruit, plus a good variety of fruit and vegetables as they supply inflammation-fighting antioxidants. Vitamin A is another essential for healthy skin, as is Selenium, a mineral found in oily fish, grains and nuts – Brazil nuts are absolutely loaded with it.

Skin renews one thin layer every 30 days or so to reveal new fresh skin underneath, so it’s this skin which is still forming and which will come to the surface in about four months. Any dietary changes right now which include foods good for healthy skin will really make a difference so don’t go giving up because you don’t see immediate changes, they are happening, just out of sight.

Help For Dry Tired Skin Today

First off and even if your face is sore, do try to gently exfoliate any dead cells away before applying any mixture, so nature’s best can get to the heart of the problem rather than be met by a layer of muck which it can’t penetrate. Don’t use a blackhead scrub, but a very gentle one which will smooth dead skin cells away rather than sandpaper them off! If your skin really is burning skip this step and get straight to the honey.

I use my grannies remedies for dry skin which are all natural products and things you’ll likely have in the kitchen and refrigerator. Often ingredients like honey, bananas, avocado and especially cream (yep, the sort you eat) make wonderfully rich restorative face masks.

For very dry skin coconut or olive oil added to honey and cream is incredibly good, and on wind scorched skin they are generally way less irritating than many commercial moisturizers especially perfumed ones – but do a tiny patch test behind your ear first and hold off for twelve hours, if no bad reaction, paint it on!

You can leave the ingredients to work pretty much for as long as you like with no harm, but 10 minutes is usually about right. Repeat every other day or every day if you wish and continue with your usual skin care routine as well, including a good rich moisturizer.
