How to Treat Acne Scars at Home

Since the average person doesn’t have the luxury of having a full time team to photo-shop and air brush their appearance to perfection, we have to rely on other at home treatment solutions. Thankfully there are safe, effective and quick at home treatments for our acne scars, including creams and at home chemical peels.

Isn’t it bad enough that we had to get the pimple in the first place and now the pesky thing left behind its call card? Our skin is miraculous in that it heals itself, however sometimes in its attempt to heal our wound; it leaves behind too much collagen, resulting in acne scaring. Deeper skin tones typically notice a darkening of the skin due to these scars. Lighter skin tones experience redness. Most scars are shallow in appearance, but some can reach deeper into the skin layers.

What makes acne scarring worse?

The Sun:

The sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays can lead to further darkening of the scar and can slow the healing process down. This is mainly because of melanin, the substance that our skin produces to absorb and neutralize the ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. The more melanin our skin produces, the darker it will be. Now in theory this sounds awesome, as who wouldn’t want a golden tan? However, if your skin is suffering from acne scarring, the skin is in healing mode and more susceptible to the sun and its harmful rays. Sunscreen should be worn at all times to help prevent further darkening to the acne scar.

Picking or Popping the Blemish

What is it about pimples that make you want to pop them? Seriously, some people get really excited about this. And no, no, no, it does not make them go away faster and it is not doing your skin any favors. So, repeat after me: “I will no longer pop my pimples” Now, doesn’t that make you feel better? Popping the pimple can cause the pus and bacteria to go even deeper into your skin and scar. Picking at the scar, I may or may not be guilty of this myself, slows the healing process of the skin, damaging the collagen your body is producing to heal the scar to begin with. Damaging the collagen will leave indentations, or deepen the scar.

At Home Acne Scar Treatments

Topical Creams:

There is a wide range of topical creams available. Cortisone creams can be used to reduce inflammation caused by acne scarring. Other topical creams contain a type of bleaching agent, lightening up the hyperpigmenation that the acne scar left behind. However, it can be hard to spot treat with a bleaching cream, as it can still leave your face with an uneven skin tone. All bleaching creams will make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays, as it is lightening it. Individuals with lighter skin tones are more likely to burn when out in the sun. Sunscreen should be applied diligently to protect from new damage.

At home Chemical Peels:

At home chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the surface of your skin. There are different levels of at home chemical peels, the strength level is determined by the type of chemical used. The type, depth and size of your acne scarring will determine the level of your at home chemical peel. The home chemical peel dissolves the damaged, scarred surface tissue and stimulates the growth of new skkin cells. The damaged skin then peels off, replacing it with a more youthful layer of skin. The new skin is also smoother and less wrinkled, with visual improvement of your acne scarring. An at home chemical peel typically takes about a week, with the stronger, deeper peels taking slightly longer. There is typically no down time during an at home chemical peel and normal daily activity can still be carried out. Most peeling will occur toward the end of the process, normally the last two days. Depending on your individual comfort level, you may choose to not go out publicly during the final peeling stage, however it is safe to do so. Once the process has been completed, the appearance of acne scarring and redness are improved. Again, sunscreen should be applied daily after an at home chemical peel to help protect your skin from any new damage.

At home treatment of acne scars are safe, quick, and effective. They can leave our skin refreshed, smooth, and provide minimized or reduced hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. Our skin, especially our face, is our billboard to the world. Advertize to the world healthy, glowing skin.
