How to Treat Age Spots at Home

There are options to treat age spots at home, without having to seek expensive laser treatment. At home treatment of age spots includes: prevention, microdermabrasion, topical age spot creams, and at home chemical peels.

Age Spots, refers to the brownish spots that appear on our face or body as a result of overexposure to the sun. Our skin has a melanin pigment, which absorbs sunlight to naturally protect our skin from harmful UV rays. However, as we age, our skin looses its natural ability and our skin is more susceptible to damage from the sun, resulting in age spots.

Prevention:

Prevention is always the best pre-treatment. Remember to wear sunscreen to help protect our skin. It is never to late to start! Even if your skin is already showing signs of damage, wearing sunscreen will help to prevent further damage and age spotting. Another thing to consider is the amount of time we spend driving in the car. Car window glass protects us from the UVB light, which will keep us from being sunburned, but not UVA light, which is responsible for sun damage and aging skin. It is important to remember to have our car windows tented to help further protect our skin when driving.

Microdermabrasion:

Microdermabrasion is a technique that is used to rejuvenate the upper layer of the skin. It helps to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells. This results in an improvement in the texture of the skin, diminishing fine lines and can improve the appearance of age spots. There are several over the counter microdermabrasion kits that can be purchased for use at home, most ranging under $100. Keep in mind that it can take up to 10 weeks for skin to show improvement.

Topical Age spot Creams:

There are a wide range of topical age spot creams, most involving a type of bleaching agent. Bleaching products are good for bleaching large areas of discoloration. However, if you are looking to treat for individual age spots, topical creams may not be your best treatment. It is hard to confine the cream to an individual spot, and could cause bleaching of the skin around the age spot, which could make the appearance of your skin worse. Keep in mind that all bleaching creams make your skin more sensitive to the sun, as you are lightening it. Sunscreen should be applied more diligently to protect from further damage.

At Home Chemical Peels:

At home chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the surface of your skin. There are different levels of at home chemical peels, each depending on the strength of the chemical used. The chemical solution dissolves the damaged, age-spotted surface tissue. The damaged skin is then replaced with a more youthful layer of skin, as the old skin peels off. The new skin is also smoother and less wrinkled. An at home chemical peel typically takes about six to seven days to complete. There is normally little downtime during an at home chemical peel and daily activity can be carried out. Most of the peeling will occur toward the end of the process, and depending on your individual comfort level, you may choose to not go out publicly during the final peeling stage. Once the six-day process has been completed, the appearance of age spots are improved. Again, sunscreen should be applied daily to help protect your skin.

Treatment of age spots can be done at home, with many options available. You should choose the option that best fits your skin, and may need to experiment with a combination of these options to completely treat your age spots at home.
