Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition that will affect millions of us at sometime during our lives. Although not considered a medically serious condition, it can have a dramatic impact on self esteem. For the sufferer, finding a solution that works is often a high priority. Laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is often advertised as the only "real" way to remove darker pigmentation. So what are these treatments? Do they work? And what are the alternatives?
The most common form of laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is a process called Advanced Intense Pulsed Light therapy also known as Advanced IPL therapy. This is where pulses of light are are fired at the affected area of skin, these pulses of light are attracted to areas of the skin that are high in melanin (the chemical that is responsible the color or pigment of your skin) where it is then absorbed. These pulses of light then convert to heat (60 - 70C) and disintegrate the darker skin cells. After treatment, the area of skin treated will scab a little, peel and gradually fade. It will normally take up to 6 treatments to achieve the required results, with a 2 to 3 week waiting period between sessions. As with all things "cosmetic", the cost of IPL therapy isn't cheap, at the time of writing, treatments range anywhere from $150 - $300. As with all clinical procedures, always do your research, and find a clinic with a proven track record of this procedure.
Another common form of clinical treatment for hyperpigmentation is Microdermabrasion. This a process in which the surface layers of the skin are "sanded" away. As unappealing as it may sound, the patient will feel very little discomfort during the procedure. A small handheld instrument blasts very fine particles of aluminium oxide against the skin, removing the top layer. Within the instrument is a small vacuum which then collects the dead skin cells and oxide particles. The process is quick, and has earned it the nickname "the lunchtime peel"". A course of treatments is recommended, with each one costing $70 -$150, depending on where you go. Although less invasive than IPL therapy, microdermabrasion has been known to cause pinpoint bleeding if the procedure isn't done correctly, so again, do your research on a suitable clinic.
- What are the alternatives?
With the obvious cost involved in the laser and clinical treatments for hyperpigmentation, most will look for a more cost effective (and less invasive) solution. Happily there are a few alternatives. Natural remedies for hyperpigmentation are always worth a try, some people have excellent results using cheap natural ingredients to create powerful remedies for dark pigmentation. Another alternative is a good quality hyperpigmentation cream, some are reputed to have excellent results. Remember that a brand name and expensive price tag won't guarantee results, and products with good reviews are best.
Always remember that although clinical procedures may work, drastic action is not always necessary.
