So What Actually Is Psoriasis?

Some Interesting Information About Psoriasis.

Research is being carried out all the time but so far research has shown that this chronic skin complaint seems to be genetic. This means that you are more likely to develop this disease if it is known that some other members of your family, past and present, also have suffered with the chronic condition. Having said that though, no one is positively sure what the true cause is and potentially anyone has a possibility of developing this autoimmune disease.

The most usual type of this disease is known as plaque psoriasis. With this type, the sufferer’s skin cells reproduce new skin before the old skin has had a chance to die off. Usually, and in a person who doesn’t have this skin complaint the normal skin replaces the old dying skin with new skin over the course of around 30 days. This happens as an ongoing and constant process but what happens with a sufferer of this chronic disorder is that this process is speeded up considerably leaving the new skin with nowhere to go and so there is a buildup of skin that looks very thick, red and is often in patches.

Infections, stress, injury to the skin, allergies and side effects of some medications are thought to be able to ‘trigger’ the onset of psoriasis but it is also thought that it can come and go as it pleases, so really it continues to remain somewhat of a mystery. It usually presents itself the same way in each of its sufferers. There is the build up of the skin which creates scaly red patches, then there is the inflammation of this build up of skin and then, and probably the most irritating of all of the symptoms, there are the ‘pustulars’ or wounds that cause the scaling to weep, particularly if they are picked at.

Learning about what this autoimmune disease is and how it can affect you is extremely helpful towards the understanding and how it can be dealt with on a day to day basis.

Living with this chronic skin disorder can be debilitating, embarrassing and distressing. It can cause the sufferer to feel very low, unable to cope and at times left feeling very depressed. If you or someone you care about suffers with psoriasis it is important to try to remain as positive as you can while dealing with the disorder on a day to day basis. Try using positive affirmations, meditation, natural or holistic methods as resources for dealing with and perhaps even one day curing the psoriasis.
