The Importance Of Using A Moisturizer For Psoriasis

When it comes to treating psoriasis there are a lot of different factors to consider. This chronic skin condition is one that baffles sufferers, dermatologists and scientists alike! With no cure, the best thing a patient can do is try lots of different treatments and work out a management plan that is going to help keep the problem under control.

Three main types of treatment prove to be the most successful: topical treatments (either prescribed or over the counter), phototherapy and natural remedies. Systemic and biologic therapies may also be highly effective, but they come hand in hand with some pretty serious potential side effects, and this route should only be pursued on the advice of a qualified health professional, and if all other treatment methods have failed to produce results.

Whatever sort of treatment works best for you, it is absolutely crucial that you moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! This is the best way to soften those scales and make your skin look as soft and smooth as possible. No moisturizer will get rid of psoriasis (and do not believe anybody who claims to know one that will), but many of them come highly recommended by people who suffer from this skin condition, and those are the people you should be listening to!

What are the main things you should be looking for in your moisturizer for psoriasis? First of all, look for an emollient, which is a type of moisturizing agent that is formulated to be similar to the skin's natural lubricants. As a general rule, emollients and ointments are more effective on psoriasis than regular creams and lotions are. The down side is that they are stickier, gooier, and messier, but if you want to help your skin you need to put up with this!

Secondly, go for a product with water-binding agents, such as collagen, elastin and proteins, to lock moisture into the skin. Something else to look for is ingredients known to soothe and calm the skin, which help to reduce the inflammation and redness that goes along with this condition. Aloe, grape extract and green tea are some examples.

Finally, look at the list of ingredients and see if there are any antioxidants, like selenium and vitamin A. These will help your psoriasis in many ways, including boosting cell renewal and eliminating scales.

Whatever product you use, try to apply it liberally all over your body at least twice a day. If possible, take a warm bath - not hot, as this is likely to make your patches even redder - and apply it while your skin is still slightly damp. If you find it too messy or time-consuming to do every morning and evening, stick to a night time routine and apply a slightly lighter lotion in the morning before you get dressed.

Keep these tips in mind and you may find that treating psoriasis is slightly easier!
